I have an NEC 19" FE950+ (purchased between Jan and June of 2001) which I believe is on its way out :(.

I notice it more at higher resolutions, but its apparent in all resolutions/color bits/refresh rates. It is the most noticable with text. My screen seems to wiggle horizontally.

I want to make sure before I make a big purchase to replace it.

My video card is an ATI RADEON 9800 PRO (purchased in the last 2 months). I have been running my video card with no fan for the vast majority of its life (using a Zalman 80C-HP [with no fan]). My case is an Antec Sonata (with 2 120mm Fans [one default case fan and one Enermax Adjustable]). I have a Thermalright SLK-900A with a Panaflo 92mm Medium Output w/RPM on my CPU. Additionally, I have a Zalman ZM-NB47J Northbridge cooler.

I don't know what the inside temperature is, but it seems very cool. I can place my hand on the Zalman video cooler and its not warm at all.

I attempted to plug my NEC 17" XV+ into the primary video connection on my ATI card an no problems, but no matter which connection I plug my NEC 19" FE950+ into, it has the same symptoms.

So, is my monitor on its way out?

"Is my monitor on its way out?"
Thats a weird way of saying if something is gonna die or not but it may be a while before it heads "out". Has it had any major bumps or drops in the past? Im still using my Gateway monitor from 1999 and since about 2 years ago I get a yellow screen every now and then but thats just because of the VGA port being loose in the back. All I have to do is smack it on the top a couple of times and it goes back to normal. Maybe you should try giving it a few punches and see what happens. If that doesnt work then I suggest getting you a new 19 inch LCD.

try moving it to a different room, it could be power lines or something like that. i've power freakishness mess up many monitors, so try moving it.

i had that wiggle problem with a model of my viewsonic p95f+b. it would have that wiggle...but only at high resolutions...refresh rate didn't matter. fortunately, i was able to get an RMA. the tech supp. guy said that it probably wasn't being caused by anything power-related, though.

But i'd test it in other rooms anyway...try a new output cable (if you have the easily removable type) or a new power cable, try it on another computer...try it with a different video card. all these things could be the cause. though it could also just as easily be a capacitor that's dying.

if you try all this stuff and report it to a tech that tries to fix it, he should be able to tell you if it's worth fixing. if it's something simple like a bad capacitor, you should be able to get out of there for the minimum bench fee...like $60-70 probably...though it always sucks to learn that it'll cost the same as a new monitor to fix :\\\
