Monitor not responding no matter what I do

This morning my brother got up and tried to turn on his computer. He heard everything start up but there is nothing showing up on the monitor. The light on the monitor is yellow as it does when it's waiting for a signal. If he unhooks the monitor from the computer he gets the no signal error and when he plugs it back in it goes away. He checked every connection on his motherboard and drives, etc and can't find anything wrong. When I got home I checked them all again and just can't get it to work. I would hate to think that something like his video card is bad but I guess that could be it? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

I took his monitor and hooked it up to my computer and it worked fine.

I took another monitor and hooked it up to his computer, still didn't work.

I took his video card and tried it in my computer and i worked fine.

So, his monitor and video card are fine. Other than the motherboard what else is there that could be wrong? Returning the motherboard would be a pain.

We don't have another motherboard that will support his cpu so we can't try that. That shouldn't affect the monitor coming on anyway should it? It doesn't even check for a cpu until after the monitor has come on and the BIOS have loaded right? I could be wrong about that but I just want to check.

One more thing, the fan on the video card spins when we turn on his computer so it is getting power from the AGP slot.

Try getting into safe mode blind by hitting f8 and see if it works. If it does than somehow it may have gotten switched to a resolution that it couldn't handle. Not likely but possible. Also try reseating everything like processor, video card and resetting the cmos.
 
if you took his vid card with your monitor and it worked, then either the vid card is dead or the agp slot on the mobo is dead (may be getting power, but not full i/o). this is assuming his vid card is pci. if his is agp then it sounds like the vidcard is dead.
 
Probably fried the cpu. Is it an old AMD with a clump of dust on the HS and fan? Does the chip get warm? if not, its probably roasted. seen it dozens of times.
 
Actually it's a 5 month old 1 ghz athlon 🙂 Anyway, I tried my video card in his computer and it won't work either. I know his video card is fine, cause it works in my computer. I'm still not sure how this could be a cpu problem. Doesn't a computer boot even without a processor? The one thing I can come up with is that it is the AGP slot or some part of the motherboard. Does anyone know anything else I can do to test these theories? Thanks

Edit: I reset the bios and that didn't work either.

the vid card is dead. if his worked fine, and it didnt kill his card, then it's just your card that's bad 🙂 (assuming his is agp).
 
They are both AGP cards

Both video cards work perfectly in my computer.

Neither video card work in my brothers computer cause it's just messed up at the moment.

The video cards are fine 🙂
 
doh, i just realized something, we are talking about his computer, not yours 😱
i was thinking everything was the other way around, no wonder im so friggin confused 🙂
now ill have to go back and read it all again and get everything in the right order
 
damn i really went off on a tangent. oh well ill read more carefully next time. anyways, what everyone else said. you could try doing the f8 trick to get into safe mode, the cpu could be dead, or the mobo 🙂

OK so we have ruled out the Video Card and the Monitor right?
So let's see whats left......hmmmmm CPU....Memory possibly.....Bad Bios....Bad Motherboard.
Take off the Heat sink/Fan unit, take out the cpu....inspect it closely for burn marks or burning smells.
Reseat it and try again.
You can also rule out the CPU by installing a cheap Duron in there...they go for about 40 bucks.
You haven't by chance flashed your BIOS have you?
 
Try getting a PCI vid card and try that. i once had (still actually) an abit BF6 that had the same problems, until I popped in a pci card.
 
I finally got back around to looking at his computer again. I reset the BIOS and it worked. That's all. Problem solved. Thanks for all the help.
