Monitor Noises

Im running a KDS VS-19SN 19 inch CRT monitor. For the longest time i have been getting squeels out of my monitor. A soft, high pitched buzzing sound basically. Usually i just lower or raise the refresh rate at it will go away for a while. I keep it at 72-75hz. I have no clue as to why this is happening. Is my monitor just trash or does it not like my video card. Both the monitor and video card are like 5 years old. Geforce 2 TI (needs upgrade ).

I have had several monitors that developed similar problems...they get better and worse with different refresh rates, but the problem never goes away...usually its a monitor going bad causing the noise, I RMA'd mine and got another that didn't have the problem. It can also be caused by electrical devices so just to be sure you should try it on another computer before replacing it.

Sounds like the flyback transformer in the monitor. Probably something is rattling around inside of it.

Lol is it bad if somethings is rattling around? Also KDS says the optimal settings are 1280x1024 at 85hz. HOWEVER i cant play any games after that because i get an out of range message then. Any suggestions or should i just request an RMA.

The 'Out of Range' error is due to the video card.

The high pitch squeal can also be caused by too high of an input voltage
(more than 110v).

If the unit is more than 3 years old you are out of luck on RMA'n it.

So my AWESOME (lol) Geforce 2 Ti is giving me some probs with the out of range. :\ Well looks like a perfect excuse to get my FX 5900!! How do i fix the voltage input then? New cord new connect?

i had the same problem. If u have a phone near ur monitor try taking it away. it worked for me

For the voltage problem, there is nothing you can do. The transformers just degrade over time, or come loose, etc. I'd think a geforce 2 could handle 1280x1024, did you check the manual to see if it was capable of that resolution?

No i didn't check the manual. Its so old and i got it OEM. Its a Visiontek lol. WHo now only makes and provides support for its ATI cards :-\. However 1280x1024 @ 85hz isn't that a lot for a Geforce 2? But doesn't 3dmark tell you all the capable refresh rates and resolutions tho? Ill check, but back to the monitor is it in any danger of "blowing up" or frying on me because KDS seems to have a major problem with that.

By INPUT voltage, I mean the voltage coming from the Power Source (power strip, wall outlet).
The unit is designed to work with 110 volts (or 220v Euro). If you have 115 volts coming out of
the power source, it overloads the monitor enough to cause the high pitched squeal.

Are you using DirectX 9 by chance?
I have seen a number of GF2 ti (not ti 200/500) cards that were unable to handle it.

I believe the GF2 ti was capable of up to 2048 x 1536 @60-75Hz 8/16-bit color.

Yep im using DX 9. But i dont have my resolution any where near that. 1280x1024 @ 32bitt @ 70hz. So i just have to wait until the montiro dies then. Notin i can do about it?

There really is nothing you can do about the noise, its internal to the monitor. You can RMA it (like I did) or buy a new one, unless you have the equipment to open up a monitor and start replacing things.
