Monitor loses video signal just before Windows

The computer boots fine, shows the Windows splash screen, then blacks out and loses the video signal just before Windows starts almost like the machine has gone into power save mode. Once this happens, I have to use the power switch to reboot as the keyboard is non-functional. This problem is intermittent and the computer works fine about 2/5 times. After repeated reboots, sometimes it works ok. I've tried two different video cards (Voodoo and Radeon) and two different monitors (totally different brands) but get the same problem. I've played with the power management in both the bios and Windows to no avail.

I have *not* updated the bios yet.

Any Ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

before trading out the video cards did you remove all traces in the registry etc of the former drivers reboot and set to a standard agp graphics adapter

reboot load the proper drivers?

this sounds like a driver remnant left behind causing instability

Same exact thing happened to me the other day.....turned out to be a bad IDE cable. I'm not saying that is your problem but it is an easy check.
