Monitor interference or is it dying?

I'm trying to root out the source of the problem where I've noticed that my monitor is not quite "solid" as of late.
Everytime my monitor is on now, there are faint flickering and shakings on certain parts of the monitor; specifically, the lower right hand and lower left hand corners of the display.
The flickering and shaking doesn't happen to all areas of the display, just on those two corners... about 3 inches x 3 inches in area wise. There are times where it would even happen on the top two corners but bottom two corners are the most frequent.
I can't really figure out what the problem is, and to make the matters worse, this happened when I changed various things around my monitor... like moving to a new apartment and installing new speakers.
The monitor was basically fine until I moved in the new apartment and installed a set of Klipsch Promedia 4.1 speakers. I figured the new speakers might be causing interference to the monitor so I removed them and stashed them in a closet for about a week now. That really didn't help as the faint flickering and shaking still happens in the corners. I tried plugging the monitor into different power outlets, degaussed the monitor, checked all the connections.... everything's been done and is fine.

Anyone know what kinda stuff might make my monitor do this?

Also, I forgot to mention, on the areas that are being affected, there is a very, very slight symptom of discoloration... it's usually best visible when I display the screen in all whites... the bottom corners usually have a slight discoloration of a very faint blue or a very faint yellow.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

The discoloration on some parts of your monitor is caused by the presence of a magnetic field. I think your speakers were the cause for this, but how come it's still there after you degaussed your monitor. Could it be that the computers internal degausser were knocked from its usual position when you moved the computer? Anyways if you can get your hands on a degaussing wand, this would prove whether your monitors degaussing function is working or not. Another solution is to move your computer to another area in the apartment.

Ahh, I'm sorry to hear that, culex... I have a similar issue. 🙁

The lower left corner of the monitor flickers, whether it's refreshing at 100 Hz or 60 Hz. Not only that, but there are some relatively faint vertical lines of discoloration running down the left side of the screen. They are, as you said, mostly visible on an all-white background, but they can be seen at times during normal usage.

I used to have a speaker sitting next to the left side of my monitor, and I think that might be the source of the problem. And also, I moved as well, so perhaps something got damaged internally during the move? I have to admit, it probably wasn't handled with the utmost of care... Anyways, I've degaussed, moire adjusted, etc... all to no avail.

So by the sounds of it, we're in the same boat.

Could the presence of a speaker (and therefore a magnetic field) over a long duration have had some permanent effect on the monitor? Although you made it sound as though you didn't have the speaker next to your monitor for that long. What about during the move? Could it have been bumped, or jarred? I think that might have happened to mine.. 😱

Several good points and interesting thoughts on factors that can cause problems to monitors, CloudShinji. I hadn't considered the long-term effect of placing speakers near a monitor before. It sounds like something worth considering, although the fact that most computer users probably place a pair of speakers (albeit different ones with different power ratings) right next to their monitor without noticing any problems would lead me to suspect that this probably doesn't make much of a difference. I do know for a fact that placing my cell phone within about a foot of my monitor (esp. while talking on the phone) would cause the image to shake.

Culex, I think Cloudshinji mentioned most of the things that you can try. A couple of years ago, the image on my monitor also started shaking one day even though I hadn't changed or moved my setup for months. Degaussing and moire adjusting didn't help, but turning down the refresh rate did. So if you already tried that w/o any success, maybe you can call the manufacturer and see if they have any suggestions. Best of luck...

Wow, I just got the same problem since I moved into a new room. When my comp was in the other room, it was perfect, but in this room my monitor flickers depending on what part of the room i'm in. I am pretty sure it is caused by the power breakers in the room, is there any ways to sheild this?

monitor interference is caused by RFI/EMI (radio frequency interference and electromagnetic interference), sources for these are
- motors (eg. if you have a massive fan attached to your case)
- fluorescent lighting
- your mobile phone (when making or receiving calls)
- nearby power lines (eg your computer power cable. If other cables like the monitor is next to the power cable, try to position it so that it
they don't run parallel to one another ie. place it so that it forms an intersection. Otherwise the monitor will be prone to crosstalk interference.
- also if you've modded your case (eg. put perspex glass, there is less sheilding because the part you would've cut out is the metal side bit. So if your monitor is next to your case with the clear perspex glass along side it, the interference from your computer would be able to reach the monitor.
- If your really desperate you can wrap your whole monitor in alfoil paper.
Hope this works.
