Monitor help, set to 120hz, cant change! Problem solved!

I really hope someone here can help me. My sons computer setting was changed to 120hz display, but monitor is only capable of 60hz. monitor is blank just showing message that it cant display current settings, but without being able to display I cant set back to 60hz. losing my mind trying to correct this. so far have tried connecting to my tv with hdmi. can display but the monitor options for the vga port are not available to change. also tried disabling driver and reinstalling driver, both not effective. computer running win8. any ideas?

couldnt change in safe mode, but was able to do system restore back to before change in settings and that did the trick.
