Monitor going bad?

I have a question I was hoping someone here could answer about my 21" CRT monitor. I believe it is going bad but wanted to get some other opinions before I started putting too much time into looking for another one.

When I booted up my computer today, the colors on the monitor were not right. I don't know how best to describe the problem but they weren't the usually "true" colors. I tried adjusting the colors with the controls on the monitor but that still didn't correct it. It may have helped but did not solve the problem completely. I don't know if I should try to adjust those settings more first but I think I have them as good as I will be able to get.

The monitor is probably fairly old. I have had it for about 3 years and I bought it used from my office when they were selling some old computers. So there was never any guarantee about to how well it worked in the first place. And since they were selling it there is probably a good chance it was 5-10 years old when I bought it but no way to know for sure.

As for specifications on my system:
Monitor: 21" CRT
Video card: GeForce 7800GT I am pretty sure that it isn't the video card as this is pretty new.
I have had my current setup for at least a couple months as the last change I made was putting in the video card.
If you would like to know any other specifications about my computer let me know and I will reply back.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Do the colors some unusually blue? red? green? etc? I would say with a safe bet your monitor is going to that electronics dump heap in the sky.

The reds basically appear black. The green start button in Windows XP is something like a dirty or brownish green. The blues don't seem to be as affected as the others. So I guess the colors are unusually blue. But I think its time to look for a new monitor.

Yep, it looks like the reds on the monitor died. There are three colors inside of a pixel; Red, Green and Blue. When a monitor starts going usually one of these colors will go out skewing the colors onscreen appropiately. If Red goes out there is a predominance of Green and Blue, if Green goes out Red and Blue, etc. This is all just FYI and adding a another tick mark on my post counter🙂

If you can afford it go with a LCD they last longer than CRTs

It sounds like it's going bad, but it wouldn't hurt to double check to make sure the cable is fully seated if you haven't already, and make sure there are no bent pins. I would also take a screen shot for us to look at. If the picture looks normal in the screen shot, it's the monitor or cable. If the screen shot is garbled as well, it's the video card.

Try playing a card game,
if the diamonds & hearts are black,
it's your monitor.
If you look on the monitor's label on the back, it's probably got a mfg. date.

Yeah the date on the back is December 1998. I'm not sure what the life span is of a CRT but I'm getting a new LCD monitor. Does anyone know how to dispose of old monitors? Is that something I can just put in the dumpster at my apartment complex or do I need to do anything special with it? Thanks for the help.
