Monitor goes to standby

Alright. I do not know that much about this computer yet because I just got it for my brother in law the other day. I know it has an MSI motherboard with everything on-board. It has a Socket 478 1.7 GHZ Celeron. Its in a pretty generic case (really flimsy). The other day I started it up to put Windows 2000 in it and it booted to where I was asked to insert a system disk (person before me deleted the partition so I couldnt get his data). I put the disk in and it didnt access it so I restarted to try again. When I restarted the computer runs but the monitor goes into standby. I try to restart again and it does the same thing. The monitor would not come out of standby so I could actually see something. So now the monitor and computer work together on the first boot but on the second boot it does the same thing. The monitor goes to standby. Any ideas about this? Also when I first start the computer the processor temp is about 50 degrees Celcius. Isn't this kind of high just starting up? Thanks for the help in advance.

Might want to try clearing the CMOS. Do you hear any beeps from the PC speaker? Maybe you should try to reseat the RAM too.
