Well, lets start with my computers specifications. I have a Radeon 9600 which I want to soon be a Gigabyte GeForce 6600, along with a 5 year old Hewlett packard which has worked fine. I have an 80gb Samsung SATA Hard drive with a Gigabyte GA-K8NS Ultra Motherboard and a Athlon 64 3000+ at Default speed.

Although I believe my Video card and monitor are all thats needed in this situation. The card was at default clock speed and I continued to have the issue so they are currently underclocked.

Basically what would happen is I would start playing a game called Midnight Club II on the computer and all of a sudden, sometimes after 1 hour or sometimes after 1 minute my monitor would go idle for no apparent reason. My power settings are set so the monitor won't turn off and It works with everything except games so I am sure its not the monitor. Also when the monitor idles you cannot get out of it with ctrl alt del or alt f4 or anything you have to manually restart or shut down the computer. When the monitor goes idle the caps lock, numlock, or scroll lock lights do not flash at all wether or not you click them. I am almost sure it is the graphics card.

At first I thought it may be overheating so I took off the Ati Heatsink and installed an arctic cooling VGA Silencer which helps to cool it. Yet the same problem occurs. My case is completely cooled so I highly doubt it is the card overheating. Or it is the monitor.

I was told by a computer technician it was probably the card. I cannot RMA the card because I clipped off the heatsink :-/. So I am forced to buy a new card, But I refuse to do so until I am sure that it is what is causing the problem. Is it the card? Also I cannot trade with a friend or anything to find out :(.

Hey I had the same problem with my 6800 GT. I basically just turned off fast write and disabled write combining, which can be found by going to control panel -> display -> settings -> advanced -> troubleshoot. I haven't had the problem after that and I tried it playing Republic Commando which has always given me that problem without fail. Also you might want to look into it being a power issue. GOOD LUCK

thanks, i have to go now but i disabled write combining there was nothing for fast write although their was with the other drivers. I hope this works I will be trying it later tonight. i am almost positive it is not my PSU as there shouldn't be anything wrong with it and I know alot of people that have had it.
