Monitor goes fuzzy after a while - monitor or v.card?

Using a Sony G400 that's maybe 2 years old with a Radeon 8500. 1280x1024 @ 90mhz refresh. Things have been fine until recently. I've noticed that sometimes the text gets a little fuzzy on my screen.

Turning monitor off and on does nothing.

Unplugging then replugging monitor does nothing.

Changing screen resolution to 800x600 then back again to 1280x1024 does fix it.

Is this more likely a video card issue or a monitor issue? Text is uniformly fuzzy across the whole screen, not just in one place. Occassionally the text gets fuzzy for a second then will go back to normal. I've checked all cables, they are seperated so I don't think it is interference, but I could be wrong.

By "fuzzy" do you mean it looks like it's out of focus? If so, and you notice it jumps back and forth, then it MIGHT be a dying flyback transformer in there. If so, then the fuzziness is typically combined with an increased brightness.

regards, PEter

Knock back the refresh rate a bit and lower the res also...If the monitor is the problem, then no matter what your refresh rate is or the res., it will still be doing it. Usually the monitors starts flickering and that is a tall tale sign that its going bad!😉

I have a G520P that`s doing the same thing. It`s only about 8 months old and I should have a RMA number by tomorrow. It gets fuzzy like it`s out of focus sometimes, but the biggest part of the time it works great..

Peter hit the nail on the head, it won't matter what refresh rate/res your using though, It looks like you got either what he suggested or possibly something wrong with the high voltage regulator, that can sometimes cause the exact same simptoms. Have you tried using a different monitor(any crt will do), that would be the 100% way to find out, if the problem stays with your video card, then you probably have a DAC going bad, if it doesn't have the same problems then RMA you another monitor.

I have dual monitors on my rig. Switching monitors makes no difference, the sony is fuzzy at time on either connector and the other monitor is fine. I`m also useing a radeon 8500 like DefBringer2 .
