Monitor goes black when games start

I have an EVGA 6600GT card that works ok most of the time but now when I start a game my monitor goes black and goes offline like it lost a signal from the video card. I can reboot the computer and every thing's fine until I go to start another game. When I load a game the into stuff works just fine but when game play starts "poof" the screen's black again.

My monitor is a Samsung 940BW 19" widescreen.

I tried to remove and reinstall the video card driver and reinstalled the monitor driver.

I'm running DirectX 9 with Windows XP Pro service pack 2 and auto updates.

Any suggestions?

Does this happen in every game?

Did you recently switch monitors from one with a higher resolution?

It happens no matter which game I try to run. I've had this monitor since last Christmas and it replaced a 21" Sony. I can't recall problems during the transition.

See about removing the most recent updates from Microsoft, see if that fixes the issue. How long ago did this start?

I wasn't necessarily talking about restoring, more just deleting any updates that came after that date.

Also, you may want to try using older drivers from nVidia, I have heard that sometimes the latest drivers can 'break' older cards, even though they shouldn't

I'm not sure how to remove individual updates but I'll check into it. Thanks.

I've had my issues with nVidia drivers. I've updated them in the past and they never work right. I'll try the oldest compatible driver i can find and experiment.

Does your card have multiple monitor support? (IE, dual DVI connectors?)
Do your drivers think you have more than one display connected?

Has anyone found a fix for this? I'm suffering from the same problem but it only affects certain games and with an ATI. Civ4 works, Civ4: BtS doesn't.

I have a:
C2D E6850
2 GBs OCZ Platinum Rev2 DDR 800
ATI X1900XTX
Windows XP SP2
Catalyst 7.9
Acer AL2216Wbd

It could be you are forcing refresh rates that the monitor does not support, I still have a nice crt so I'm not sure how the refresh rates translate or if they effect a lcd at all but it sounds like it could be the problem.

Hmm, I just realize that the fan for the GPU stops spinning when the black screen happens. I still can hear audio, etc...
