Hi

I'm looking for a new monitor primarily for gaming and was hoping someone could recommend a monitor.
Im running a Q6600, 8800GTS 640mb ram (OC), 4gigs of RAM.
i currently have a viewsonic 19" screen (1280x1024) with a 2ms refresh rate wich has served me great, but now im looking for something in a higher resolution.

i was planning on using my current monitor as a secondary monitor.

price is somewhat irrelevant as long as i get some value for my hard earned money 🙂

i dont know about the size, at first i was think the bigger the better, but then i was looking at some 28" on the net and started thinking they may be too big ...

i would really appreciate all the help i can get.

Well, i live in Denmark, so the price will probably be a bit higher than yours but ill go pretty high .. im willing to spend about 5.000 danish crowner (right now thats about $1.000 dollars, but the dollar rate is quite low at the moment) ..

but due to the fact that our hardware is more expensive than yours ( buhu :'( ) id say that my price range in U.S would be around $850-$900

edit: if I can get a great monitor for less than $800 that would be great too, i dont need to get an expensive one ... just a good one 😛
 
I just picked up a LG L226WTQ (may be named WTY, everyone says they're the same) for about $300 US. 1680x1050 on the resolution. I like it a lot and would recommend it -- I primarily game as well. There really aren't a lot of high end 22" monitors that are any better for gaming in that size that I know of -- maybe someone else here does.

As far as 24" and larger is concerned, you're looking at resolutions of 1920x1200 and above I think. By doing that, you basically commit yourself to buying a new graphics card @ $600 US or so every year to keep up with the new games. If you got the cash then go for a 24", but I personally wouldn't go any bigger than that for gaming.

OK, I got a 24" BenQ FP241W a couple of months and always have it at 1920x1200. I mainly do gaming and I highly recommend this monitor. No lagging or ghosting problems

I recently saw a 20" in the store, and now that I have a 24", I don't ever see my self going lower or higher for that matter. I believe the best monitor is a 24".

If you get a monitor higher than 24", you will probably need to go SLI with video card, but with this resolution, you only need 1 good video card. If you only have 1 good video card, you also avoid issues going SLI.
 
Another option is to go with a 26-27" monitor that also has a 1920x1200 resolution. Since it's the same resolution as a 24", your single video card would play games at that resolution just as well as on a 24". This would have the same pixel pitch as your 19" monitor, whereas a 24" monitor would have a smaller pixel pitch. If I were willing to spend $1,000 on a monitor, I'd go with the Samsung 275T.
 
You are not comitting to a 600$ video card every year... last year video cards for a 1920x1200 mintor cost 600$... this years cost 200. The 600$ video cards to come would be needed for resolutions HIGHER then 1920x1200.

So go ahead and get a 24-30 inch monitor (i recommend the dell monitors. Overall good price/performance ratio with performance being high). If you want the greatest performance nec or samsung are good choices. But really, you should look at every individual monitor model by itself, not based on the company who made it.

A 8800GT to drive that monitor would also be a good purchase.
 
Well, this years only cost $200 because they haven't released a high end card in a while. All I'm saying is that if you're going to be playing the latest games at 1920x1200 with all the eye candy then you're probably going to have to buy the top of the line card every generation that comes out. (i.e. for Nvidia, the 7800GTX, 8800GTX, 9800GTX or whatever).

You're not going to play Crysis or games that push the limit at 1920x1200 with eye candy on a $200 card -- and I know no card can play it right now. Which is my point really -- you'll have to pick up the top end next gen when it comes out, which will most likely be a $600 card.

Dual monitors doesn't matter Steen -- you're current card will be just fine for now imo. Supposedly Nvidia is releasing their next high end part in February, you shouldn't have to consider upgrading till then. And then it will depend on what you're playing.
 
im thinking of going for a 22", then i wont have to upgrade my gfxcard so often to play at max resolution and eyecandy
