monitor for gaming $250 range??

in regards to monitors... anyone know anything about the dell U2311 ultrasharp for $279.00, or maybe samsung
dont know anything about monitors and want to hopefully stick to around $250 range with about 24" for gaming.

suggestions anyone?

The U2311 will likely have the highest picture quality for that price... but if you require the super speed of TN based panels (personally I game on IPS and do just fine) then you'll probably want a different model.

It just depends on your stance towards TN vs IPS, honestly.

And if you want go get a really good deal Dell has the U2211H for 199.99 on eBay (a 21.5 inch IPS panel) may not be what you really want for size but i find a 22 inch isn't bad for gaming and at $200 it is about the price of a good TN.

TN is fast but bad colour, IPS is slower but much better colour reporduction and thus is more suited for people who want the best colour or for professionals who need the good colour reporduction. Now that said, IPS IS NOT that slow, you wont REALLY notice it unless you compare it directly against a TN panel.

TN is very cheap and very fast, but can't do true 24-bit color. It uses methods to fool you into seeing the full color spectrum. It also has very poor viewing angles, meaning you can't see the screen at an angle, and even those with very large monitor sizes may see differences just shifting in their seat slightly... IPS has great picture quality, but isn't quite as fast as TN.

Some people swear by the speed of TN, and say it's the only way to game... Personally, I'd rather have the slightly slower and much better looking screen.

I have a IPS and TN panels side by side.

IPS quality is clear. Better view angles and it just looks more vibrant. No response time issues on my end (had this monitor OVER 3+ years now).

Most people probably wouldn't notice it though.

I won't go IPS until I can get one that is 1920x1200, 120hz and all around favorable reviews.

I seriously doubt you're going to see a 120Hz IPS, especially at 1920 x 1200.

I'd like one too, but I think we're likely to see a new Technology before we see this.

It's an IPS, so image quality should be better, but generally IPS are a bit slower than TN's and my be subject to 'Ghosting'

You want the lowest ms response time you can find.


That said, I think the general consensus is that the U2311 is a decent Monitor.

I don't know anything about that Monitor, but if you're looking at that kind of money, the Dell U2410 is supposed to be the ultimate 24" Monitor.

The U2410 is an IPS and it's 1920 x 1200.

What about IPS panels makes it so hard to make them 120hz? Such a panel in a monitor with the speed and feel of my Syncmaster 2233RZ would be just about the best gaming monitor ever made.
