MONITOR EASY ? -- Can you buy a monitor cable for a monitor? plz read

I was drivin down the stree the other day and see 2 monitors-- a 14" old 1991 CTX brand montiro and a new 17" Dell monitor for the garbage...so i pick them up...bring them home and see the only thing thats wrong with them is that the cable (the one that is attached to the monitor not the power cable that you must add) is missing a pin or 2 in each....so i was wondering if you can buy another one of these cables and cut the other end off with the missing pins and solder it on or something...if not i guess i can just throw em out again

You can buy a new connector at Radioshack. You'll need the pinout tthough.

You might be able to do it the weird way the way my friend and I fixed one of my monitors a while back, find a metal pin or something and stick it in the hole where you are missing a pin. Then plug it into a computer and dont unplug it.... turn the computer on and with some luck you should have an image. If not maybe check out a local computer repair shop, tell them that you just want the plugs changed and see how much they will charge. Even if you pay 10-20$ for each monitor, 2 monitors for 40$ is a pretty sweet price

Not all the pins have to be there, so there maybe other problems then just a simple pin fix.
Once again, the best way to tell is to find a pinout for the given monitor.
Usually these can usually be found online, but I think there is more to the problem than just missing pins
My monitor, a Gateway VX1120 can oporate with 4 pins, certain ones, missing from the cable

Same here. There are a few monitors at our church that are missing 2-3 pins and they still work perfectly.

i c wut u mean about the pins however when i power it on it says no signal with 3 colors on the screen...so i think it works

AND i just checked the site its supposed to have 15 and it only has 13...so this should be the problem rite? my dads friedn at work told him we can pick up a cable and the 1 there off and solder the 5 or 6 wires on in about a half hour to an hour this should work....wut do u think?> and werhe can i get a cable?

What you're thinking is definitely doable, just as long as you're careful with the desoldering and soldering (and assuming there was nothing else wrong with the monitors to begin with). The way I see it, you can go several ways:

- hack out a known good connector from another monitor
- order a connector housing/pins from a decent electronic component internet store
- buy one of those VGA extension cords and splice off the ends, one for each monitor (e.g. like these).

I think in your case, the last one would be the cheapest since you've got two monitors to fix up and you can likely find them from a CompUSA or Frys for a few bucks.

thanks every1....what jus thapened is extremely random---------i figure id try the monitor 1 last time--- i plug it in--- it works....why it never works when i first got it i have no idea maybe someone did something to it while moving it all over the house...and i found out its an 19" moonitor! nice! my dual monitor setup is now compleete
