Monitor Dying

Well I guess it is time to upgrade my monitor. Mine is dying / dead.
It was a 19" Samsung 930BF at 1280X1024

Now I have been looking at monitors but now pretty much all are wide screen, which I am not overly fond of but if that is all that is available then that's what I will get.

But wondering if I should just jump to the 1920x1080p monitors vs going with the one step down at 1680x1050.

Usage is general usage and gaming. would need something that has both dvi and vga connectors.

As for brands, im more familiar with samsung, lg, philipps

Kinda both but more should I just go straight to the 1080p monitor or look at ones that are 1680x1050?
 
under $300cnd if possible. Probably around the 200-250 mark more I had done some quick looking and seen a 23 inch samsung p2350 for 219.
