Monitor Driver Question

Is it necessary to install a monitor driver if Windows XP just calls your monitor "Plug and Play Monitor"?

This is at least true for Sony CRT monitors which will operate at a maximum of 85hz until the specific monitor drivers are installed. Then you have access to everything above that.

Naustica is correct, it isn't "necessary" but for my money, I'd do it. 100hz (to me) is a LOT more comfortable on the eyes than 85hz.

and would it put more wear on the monitor if I do run it everyday at 100 hz?

edit: I have the Sony CPD-E540 21" CRT

As long as your monitor supports the refresh rate at that resolution it will be fine.
