Monitor dead? (Nec e500)

I think my Nec e500 Multisync monitor just blew. I was upgrading a friend's computer (HP xt923) to Win XP and connected my spare e500 monitor. After the upgrade, I installed the game Rogue Squadron. It played fine. But when I quit the game and WinXP switched from 3D back to 2D, the monitor went black, LED remained green, and emitted a continuous high-pitched sound. Then the LED light went dead too and I smelled burnt electronics. Didn't know software can damage hardware until last night -- or was it just coincidence? I'm about to throw it away. Is there any hope for it? Thanks.
