I'm looking to cover my monitor. My roommate comes in my room when I'm not around to use my desk for his schoolwork (his desk is messy), and I don't want him sneezing, etc on my 2405. Are there any options for covering a 24" widescreen? I was thinking of buying some kind of material and fashioning my own, but wasn't sure what kind of material to buy that would both protect and not scratch.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Just throw a towel over it. Hopefully you actually LOCK your workstation, log off or otherwise make it unusable to him?

Yeah, I lock it. He can't use it. I'm not worried about that with him. I'm mainly worried about debris, so to speak. Towel idea works. Any other suggestions?

Maybe a monitor cover from here? Scroll about halfway down the page and you'll see the box for a single monitor cover for $15.45. It looks like they custom make the covers per your monitor's measurments. :)

More pricey than just a towel, obviously :D, but whatever floats your boat. Bed, Bath & Beyond also sells vinyl pillow covers, and maybe a queen- or king-size one would fit around your monitor? Just thinking out loud.

I like the towel idea myself. You could prolly pick up a cheapy combed cotton bath towel at Target for ~ $6 or $8.

Get a pillowcase. Light weight, slide it (maybe need 2?) over screen. What I used to use for my 17", now I don't care since the grills are so small on the 2407. That and a 3 year warranty.

And neither the towel nor the pillowcase would scratch the screen if it rubbed against it? I'm anal retentive when it comes to scratching this baby.

Don't blame you. I suppose it would depend on how soft the fabric is, wouldn't it? You could probably buy a nice Egyptian cotton towel or pillowcase and be fine. I was gonna suggest a silk pillowcase, but that would be pretty expensive. :Q

Alternate idea: Go to any fabric store and just buy a piece of soft flannel -- you know, like baby pajamas are made of? Fabric stores always have seamstresses and those large cutting tables, and I'm sure they'd prolly sew a piece of flannel on three sides for you. Any dry cleaner would also probably sew the material for you like that for a few dollars (if the fabric store won't). Advantage to this idea is you can measure the monitor and then have the fabric custom cut & sewn to an exact fit. Prolly would cost less than $10.

Seeing as I'm not up on fabrics and scratching things, is flannel a material that won't scratch? I know the microfiber cloths don't scratch, but can you buy that kind of stuff, and cheaply?

I like the idea of going to a fabric store though. I could even make it look non-ghetto that way...

Go to a fabric store and find something soft, get a section of it and either sow or glue it together depending on how nice you want it look

Yeah, genuine cotton flannel is super soft and not likely to scratch. Like I said, think of thick, fleecy baby's pajamas and that's what it feels like. You want to avoid polyester or nylon for obvious reasons (abrasiveness). I use old flannel shirts to polish the wax after I've applied it to my car, so that should give you an idea of its 'non-scratchitude.' :p

Most fabric stores are HUGE and have more fabrics than you can shake a stick at. Just find a clerk, ask her to point you towards wherever they have their cotton flannel, and check out what they have. You should be able to find something not only soft but reasonably 'non-ghetto' looking too. :D And it should be dirt cheap -- I think the last time I bought some flannel (years ago) it was just a few dollars for a square yard. Throw in a couple bucks to have it sewn on three sides, and you're good to go. Like I said before, should be under $10 easy.

This is in the U.S., BTW. Not sure where you are, but I can't imagine such things varying much, price-wise, wherever you are.

In a fabric store you don't know what you're getting IMO. The flannel may feel soft, but it may be synthetic, which I think will scratch the screen.

I don't know what fabric stores you've been to, but all the ones I've ever been in have the fabrics clearly labeled either on a sign/card above the roll or on the end of the roll itself. The cardboard rolls that the fabric is wrapped around almost always have a label on the end, from the textile factory, stating what kind of fabric it is (e.g., 100% cotton, polyester, nylon, wool, rayon, whatever ....). If they didn't, how would the store know what the fabric is and what to charge people?

You don't have to just go by feel.

Keep in mind that, hopefully, no one is going to be scraping the fabric across the screen's surface anyway. It's just going to drape over the screen, with, I assume, some occasional, incidental contact against the screen. Big whoop. Buy some flannel or similarly soft material, or an Egyptian cotton bath towel or vinyl monitor cover, and don't worry about it. :)

The best one I have used is one made for covering a monitor. I don't know what it was made out of but it felt almost like tent material. Some kind of nylon I think but it was soft and silky feeling. If you can find one to buy I would do that, it would be better in the long run to get one specifically made for the job. A lot of soft clothy materials like cotton have fibers that come off over time and get in the cracks and inside of what your covering and not to mention are dust magnets.
