Is it possible for a power supply to cook a monitor? What would cause a monitor to suddenly start smoking? I don't know any more details than that, so please don't ask for more details.

How were the PC and monitor connected? Was the monitor connected to the PSU of the PC? Were they connected to the same outlet? Did he switch the monitor on before or after turning on the PC?

It could have been a number of things, including a powersurge, a component in the monitor failing due to an error in the production process etc.

Haha, why would he hook the monitor to the power supply, seems kinda retarded. Not to mention it is impossible. As far as the rest goes i have no idea what he did like i said. Seems to me the machine was working when he left for the weekend, then he turns it on and poof. Probably a circuit in the monitor i would think. I will find out tommorrow when i go over to have a look at it.

Does the monitor sport a 3 or 5 year warranty? If the warranty is expired then it's probably best to buy a better monitor anyways.

Here's some tips for care:

Keep it away from magnets
Don't place anything on top
Have fair ventilation(allow ventilation holes to breathe)
keep from sunlight and heat
keep power cords safe
No moisture
Use surge protector

Not really impossible. Early PC's (pre-Pentium) usually had a PSU you could use to power the monitor with as well.

You didn't specify what type of PC this friend of yours has ;):D
