I know there is a thread in the monitor section, but I wanted to ask you photographers specifically which monitors you are using. My 20" Trinitron CRT crapped the bed and now I need to upgrade to an LCD. Unfortunately I'm finding that many LCD's are sold with two completely different types of LCD under the same exact model number. I want to avoid TN displays entirely. What are you guys running?
 
I just have 2x QSXGA projectors projecting directly into my eyes

I'm using a Dell 2005 FPW at work, but it's starting to get old (burn-in, scratches). I recommended the Lenovo L220x to a coworker and he's loving it. Should be able to find it within your $500 budget.
 
I'm seriously considering the HP LP2275W, it is a S-PVA panel, got good reviews on its performance, and is under $400. My only hesitation is that it is a new monitor as of October, and the reviews so far have complained of a problem with horizontal bands appearing. But, there are only 9 reviews on Newegg, and I'm considering taking the plunge and being an early adopter.

There's just no way I can justify buying a TN panel when it doesn't even have true 8 bit color depth. Right from the start, you'll never be able to edit photographs to their full capabilities. And IPS panels are $$$$. I really want this HP to be the right solution.
 
I got my Dell 2407 for $475 shipped from Dell Outlet about 18 months ago, and couldn't be happier. Great monitor and reviews gave it high marks for color accuracy. Also it's a S-PVA panel IIRC (I know it's not a TN at least).

Yup that's it. They don't make them anymore, so only way to get one is to buy used. They're great panels though.
 
Thanks for reminding me about the 2005FPW! It was staring at me in the face all this time; I have one at work that I bought in 2005 and am just now learning that it is an S-IPS panel. They're going for 180-200 on ebay, so now I have a decision to make - used good monitor with questionable quality and limited warranty, or new so-so monitor for twice as much.

Hell, I could buy two 2005 FPW's for the price of the one HP that I was looking at above....
 
all the 2005 FPWs (as well as the 2001 4:3 model) are S-IPS. later models are lottery.
 
they do have backlight bleed issues, though. particularly the early revisions. mine has a slight bleed but it's not noticeable unless the screen is black and the room is dark.
 
Using a Samsung 215tw that got some attention here in Hot Deals about two years back. It's S-PVA or MVA, but the colors are great and it calibrates well. I've never had a problem with print color. Don't think they're still available, but maybe find something in the same product line.

Keep in mind that sometimes the angle-induced color shift problem is overblown. How often do you edit your photos at a 45 degree angle to your monitor?
 
Ordered the Dell 2005FPW off of fleabay for $190 with a 60 day warranty. I figure it's an IPS panel, and I could buy two of these for the price of one HP LP2275W. Can't wait to get it!
 
I dont know if its refurbed or off lease. I think the latter. They claim no scratches on the screen and 7 day return policy if i'm unhappy with it. CDI computers on ebay, had a good rating.
