well title saysit pretty much is it bad to keep turning your monitor off and on? or when it auto powers down? or should I just use a screen saver and keep it running petty much 24/7 other then when I goto sleep at night?
dont quote me on this but as far as i know, the same rule applies to most computer parts, they're made to be on a lot so its not really bad leaving it on 24/7 and using the standby option when you're not using it...
as with most electrical deviced if you repeatedly turn it on and off it could eventually potentially damage it (altho it would take a lot of repeated turning on and off)
so basically have like a 30min or whatever standby mode and i'd say you're safe...
see tahts what I thought as well, BUt every time it goes into standby and I come back it makes taht bzzzing noise like its starting up all over again, so isnt stand by pretty much teh same thing as turning it off?
I am thinking of pushing my standby time from 25 mins to about an hour...
plus my monitor is worth as much if not a couple hundred more then my CPU so its a pretty big investment and recently my old 21 incher went bad and Im getting worried about my new one dont want it to choke on me in 2-3 years....
Leaving it on a timer for standby every 1hour or so is fine. I think leaving the monitor on 24/7 is a waste of energy. Not to mention that the room will be hot all the time.
It's degaussing I believe, that might be the noise you here. It just makes sure th escreen is "fresh" I think.
Monitors eat up a lot of power and put out a lot of heat, it's probably better to have it go into standby fairly quickly for your wallets sake
I have a 3 1/2 year old monitor that still works fine and I normally turn it on and off about 3 times a day or so.
yeah def. its degaussing but I just feel as if its deterimental to the monitor on/off 4-5 times a day because all this charged electricity is zoinked through all its circuits.. but I guess not, thats good to know
monitors, just like all modern TVs, keep their color guns warm while plugged in. its never truely off unless its completely unplugged. with normal on/off several times a day usage the guns with last 9 or 10 years. in that time your image quality will degrade because of the electrons wearing away at the mask or grill of the monitor and you'll want a new one anyway.
I had an older monitor that was going dark, for the longest period of time it was on 24/7, and when I started turning it off to lower costs it started to die MUCH faster (it was dead in about 3-4 years total). The monitor that replaced that is still being used and its from week 13, 1996 (that too is going dark but 7 years is a long time.)
Generally, no. Unless you are not turning off the computer properly before using the power strip's switch. That could be bad for the computer/OS as it is not shutting down correctly.
thats wierd, my g420 sony trinitron when comming out of standby does not degauss, only degauss when i manually do it from the controls, or starting it up by pushing the button. i turn it on in morning, its set for 20 min standby, and turn it off when i go to bed. are you sure you are hearing the same sound it makes as turning on your monitor physically?
