Monitor calibration software

So... anyway I got upgraded to next-day shipping for free after waiting about 10 days for my order to ship, but I WILL have it tomorrow for sure. Providing the thing isn't defective badly, I will be keeping it. I'll be going from a Samsung 900NF (19" apeture grille) but I think the widescreen and the fact that it can sit back further on my desk will be awesome.

Anyway I have read that using DVI, the monitor settings must be adjusted through software. What kind of software should I download that I can use to test it as well as calibrate it if necessary? Anand's article mentioned OptiCal, but it looks like a sort of professional piece of software. No trial or anything. I checked out another that was pretty much the same story. I have some software from the 900NF (from 2000 though) but I'm not sure if it is meant for LCDs. The only thing I've gotten thus far is dead pixel buddy, but I read about calibration programs as well. I don't wanna pronounce the thing defective until I at least try and get it better. What do you guys recommend?
