Monitor and Resolution problem...please help..

I have a 17" Viewsonic GT775 that's giving me a headache. It's supposedly a great monitor as the manual says it can go up to 1600 by 1200 resolution and since I bought it a few years ago that's pretty good. But, for some reason, when I try to use any resolution other than 1024x768 it goes screwy on me. By screwy I mean that when I restart the computer or load up certain games (that run in 800x600) the screen shrinks down and gets all distorted until I do a data recall using the onscreen display. I have a Geforce 2 GTS with 32MB Ram and I'm running WinXP if that helps at all. I want to run in other resolutions as 1280x960 is great for this monitor, I just don't want to go through the process of resizing the window everytime I come back to the desktop, whether after gaming or rebooting. Does anyone have any idea why it's doing that?
Thanks,
madfeetch

[edit] I am using the latest drivers (21.83) and nothing is overclocked. [/edit]

Do you mean the screen in your game goes screwy, as in missing the edges on the screen or when you exit out of the game and go back to windows, it reduces the screen size?

Well, for example, if I load up Starcraft the screen goes all small and distorted like it was punched in on all sides. So when it does that I do a data recall using the OSD and it's okay again but I have to resize the screen because it doesn't go to the edges. And I have to do that everytime I play a game that runs in 800x600 or when I restart my computer. Bugs the he!! out of me and I wish that I could fix it without running in 1024x768 all the time as that just seems to small for my taste.

sounds like your monitor might have run out of memory for resolutions.

see if , buried in the menus, there's an option to clear it

you will then have to re-set all your modes to a nice looking screen, but after that it should remember your settings every time

I scoured the manual and the options in the OSD and there is no mention of memory or anything like that except for the data recall function. I am wondering if it's my videocard at all. Could that be the problem? I've had this monitor longer than I've had my current computer and I don't think that it ever did this before. But then again, I never played with the resolutions back then because I had no idea what resolution was! 🙂 I'll just have to get used to it unless you guys can think up something else. Maybe Santa will bring me a new Sony 21" with that snappy trinitron tube. Yeah right!

Have you tried:
1) Downloading the most current monitor drivers from Viewsonic?
2) Changing the refresh rate for Direct3D @ 800x600 in your video properties?
