hi all.

Iam having problems with a hd moniter. I think I should tell the whole story so u can give an accurate answer so plz bear with me.

basically I was using this hd 720p moniter for a while, then I started noticing that the text on websites and in windows was looking weird (letters wouldn't appear correctly (an n would look like an r), some letters were bold when they shouldn't be). thought it was a virus, scanned pc with everything --> negative, then finally formatted --> still there. so I thought (as weird as that sounds) may be its the screen. So I used an old 17" dell moniter using a vga cable and behold --> everything is fine.

The problem starts here: when I tried to reconnect my HD screen using the same cable I was using before (DVI-HDMI), it would say no signal but I can hear the pc booting normally. I bought a new cable --> negative, tried the screen on a different pc and its working normally. removed the gpu and connected the dvi-hdmi cable to the mobo (to use the onboard graphics --> no signal.
I tried this pc--vga cable--HD moniter, and it shows the pc booting but when it gets to loading windows, no signal again.

The moniter isn't actually detected in nvidia control panel. tried a different multi-moniter software but it doesn't show up. multi-mon says I dont have multi moniters when both moniters are connected.
I googled the problem and everyone has different symptoms. so what is going on here? can you plz help me?

thanks

specs:
i5-2400, ASUS P8H61-M Pro, GTX 460 1GB, 4GB RAM, 575W Toughpower Thermaltake

Your confounding too many things.

1. Sounds like you're assuming that the auto-detect input feature of your monitor works. When there is no signal, did you try to manually select/verify the correct source input from the monitor's control panel?

2. Did you try to boot up in safe mode, select the correct source input at the monitor and inspect the monitor settings?

Sometimes monitor electronics can simply get hosed. Try this:

Boot up.
Verify the source input at the monitor's control panel is correct.
WITH EVERYTHING RUNNING (even if there is no video signal), AT THE BACK OF THE VIDEO CARD, FULLY UNPLUG THE MONITOR CABLE, THEN RE-INSERT IT.
Perform a monitor auto-calibration
If the text still does not appear correct, then manually adjust CLOCK and PHASE settings from the monitor's control panel.

first thanks for replying. to address ur points:

1. yes I did adjust the source input manually.

2. booting up in safe made made no difference

3. unplugging and replugging ("with everything running") didnot make a difference either. I tried resetting the moniter, no difference.

I also tried resetting cmos.

can someone help me out here?
thanks

re: "I removed the gpu and connected the dvi-hdmi cable to the mobo (to use the onboard graphics --> no signal."

One more thing to check, and that is to ensure that there is no switch in the BIOS needed to use your onboard graphics (many, but maybe not all, MBs use an auto sensing I think). Also read the motherboard installation & user guide to verify which ports are actually supported by the onboard graphics.

If there is a software toggle in the BIOS for the onboard graphics then that may be an issue. Set the toggle to onboard, then shutdown and remove the GPU and reboot with the monitor connected to MB's VGA port (safest bet) and see if you can get some video.

thanks C1.
so I have been doing more troubleshooting and researching, here's whats new:

.when I removed the gpu and tried using the onboard graphics, I only get display if I use the vga cable. but it wont display using the dvi-hdmi cable.
.I tried using different resolutions, resetting the cmos, different cables, another moniter --> no display using the dvi-hdmi cable but will display using vga.
.I tried uninstalling the nvidia drivers and installed two versions of it (285.58 and 296.10) but nothing changed.
.I used a different gpu (gt240) and behold --> everything works fine using the hd moniter and the dvi-hdmi cable. so is the problem here my gpu (gtx460) or is it something else?

can someone help me please?
thanks

ok so I have done some further research and none of the threads I found, which describe the same problem, have offered a solution, except for one.
In this thread (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=158757) the op said that flashing the vga's bios solved the problem.
So is this something you guys would recommend? or do you guys have any other suggestions?
can someone please help me out here? I have been researching and troubleshooting this problem for 2 weeks now and cant find a solution!

here's another thread (http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic167685.html) I found with the exact same problem but no solution, so I am not alone in this.

Thanks

A guess is that the onboard graphics (OG) may only support VGA. (You'll have to read your MB installation guide to determine the full scope of OG port support, but if it is more than VGA then you will need to install drivers for the OG usually provided via the CD that comes with the MB.)

Otherwise, it appears that the gtx460 is defective. Is it under warranty by chance? Another possibility is to try the gtx460 in another computer (eg, a close friend's). This will give an opportunity to try their monitor as well as your current one.

Finally, just take the card to a computer repair shop and pay them a fee to test it for you before deciding to toss a $200 part.
