If you can afford just $184, the bike with Altus equipment is going to be better than many bikes you find elsewhere with *no* brand name on it, but as other posters have said, it will be heavy and not of super-high quality. For $184, though, that will be among the best you can get, with at least some Shimano parts. (Shimano is a brand name, and is used to make many or most of the bikes sold in the United States. SRAM and Campignolo are two other brands. Other brands should be looked as suspiciously when used as parts for the derailleur sets; for the rest it's not as important, but still worth considering.)
An entry level bike at a bike shop won't be *that* different from this bike - mostly very entry level Shimano all around, with other cheaper parts the less expensive you go.
You can get a good bit of price information on
www.supergo.com, which provides lots of data.
Again, all that said, for $184, it's at all bad. You could probably use it for a year and sell it for $150 and not feel a bit bad.
Everyone should remember that not everyone gets into biking in quite the same way - and spending just $184 is a great way to find out if you'll be more interested in biking.
