Mongoose Pathfinder mountain bike list 499 now 184.99

Altus rear deraileurs... Ewww... Very entry level... Anything someone would reasonably expect to pay 4-500$ for would NOT have Altus deraileurs..

If you want a bike, go to a bike shop. Otherwise, if you plan to ride seriously, you'll be sorry...

My 98 Klein Pulse is worth its weight in gold...

I learned the hard way on this a few years ago. Wanted to get fit, so went to Dicks and got a DS mountain bike for $350, it looked nice but it was SO heavy and not great quality. I ended up taking it back and went to my local bike shop instead. I decided to buy the best i could afford - i bought a Cannondale 900SL instead - just has front suspension but a MUCH MUCH better made bike, and weighs just over 20Ibs, compared to mass produced bikes that weigh 40Ibs+. If you are at all serious about riding, get the best bike you can, you wont regret it.

Cannondales are also made in the US - i toured the factory a few years back as they are close to where i live (its in Bedford, PA). Was very interesting 🙂

DOn't fall for the Mongoose/China deception. This thing rides like its pulling a refrigerator. HEAVY and CLUNKY.

Mongoose, like GT and Schwinn have blown a$$ since they were bought out by the same company who now owns Huffy...Pacific Cycle. They may have models with prices upwards of $500, but the fact remains that they are department store bikes mass-produced in Taiwan. I wouldn't touch that 50 lb bike with a 10 ft pole 😛

if you're looking for a good starter bike, go to a bike shop and check out some of their used ones. very good bikes at great prices.

i recommend specialized

That Marin bike is an excellent deal, just make sure you get it assembled and tuned at a bike shop if you end up buying it.

If you can afford just $184, the bike with Altus equipment is going to be better than many bikes you find elsewhere with *no* brand name on it, but as other posters have said, it will be heavy and not of super-high quality. For $184, though, that will be among the best you can get, with at least some Shimano parts. (Shimano is a brand name, and is used to make many or most of the bikes sold in the United States. SRAM and Campignolo are two other brands. Other brands should be looked as suspiciously when used as parts for the derailleur sets; for the rest it's not as important, but still worth considering.)

An entry level bike at a bike shop won't be *that* different from this bike - mostly very entry level Shimano all around, with other cheaper parts the less expensive you go.

You can get a good bit of price information on www.supergo.com, which provides lots of data.

Again, all that said, for $184, it's at all bad. You could probably use it for a year and sell it for $150 and not feel a bit bad.

Everyone should remember that not everyone gets into biking in quite the same way - and spending just $184 is a great way to find out if you'll be more interested in biking.

I got my bike on sale for $300 from a local bike shop (GIANT brand, aluminum frame). A good deal, since I'm tall and need an extra large frame. It took a long time just to find a frame that would fit me. I've since upgraded to air-filled front shocks. Definately go to a bike shop even for an entry level bike, as there are always bikes on sale, and they will usually give you a free tune up after a few months (after the gear shifter wires have been stretched out).

I hate to threadcrap, but folks, seriously, save your money. If this bike last a year of moderate riding, it would be a mirracle. Mongoose make a crapload of heavy, cheap, department stoor bikes that are no better than Huffy used to be.

Get a novice bicycle at a 'real' bike shop, not a department store.

The worst bike at a bike shop is still better than the best bike at a department store.

Sorry OP, but bad deal. Mongoose can be found at any Wal-mart and I a few years ago purchased one because of the low price. After a month the thing literally fell apart and that was just from riding off of curbs. Eventually the rear sprocket came loose and went through the rear spokes going as fast as i could and destroyed everything, including my clean BVDs
