Money Order question - need definitive answer

so, let's say you had a deal going with someone in FS/FT.. but you're not sure if they're going to follow through or not.

(If they're reading, oh well.. maybe it'll help 'em get their ass in gear.. you know who you are 😉)

I think I want to just deposit the money back into my bank account until I see some sign that they've shipped. But I've already filled the money order out....

Can I still deposit it? lol.... 😕

On a recent deal i got a MO from my bank and cashed it back to myself with the check and the reciept. The guy was supposed to send 10 days ago, and then i get the MO back wtih return to sender on it..... Atleast he didnt troll me. Im sick of dealing with newb idiots in the FS&T forums.

Umm, hence the problem.. It's already made out to them; their name, not mine.

Which company is the money order from? Different companies have different policies.
Western Union..

I might have the other half of the money order(receipt) somewhere, if that will help.. I'm not sure if I threw it away or not tho, heh.

As long as you have some proof that you purchased it, you can write "Not Used for Intended Purposes" on the back then deposit it.
Also, if you have proof that the MO is yours, just change the payee to your own name.

Edit: just noticed above post - find the receipt then deposit it using the above method. Not Used For Intended Purposes is a legal endorsement and banks will accept it with proof of purchase.

Did you purchase from a bank or from the post office?
7-11... lol

Western Union does not allow changes to a money order after it has been completely filled out, so you can't change the payee name, even if you purchased the MO. You might be succesful if the clerk cashing it is a moron, but in any other circumstances the bank teller or cashier won't accept it. If you have the receipt stub, you can request a refund from Western Union, but there is a processing fee ($15 I think...). You can call them at 1-800-999-9660 and request a refund form.

WTF? It's my money, lol...

I guess I shouldn't have filled it out, heh. There's gotta be another way.. I like the "Not for intended purpose" idea...

I've never heard of that myself, but it's worth a shot. You could always request a refund and eat the processing fee if it backfires.

Bump for more options...

So I can just write "Not for intended purpose" on the back and deposit it ? Probably have to sign the back too?

It does have my signature on the front.. "Purchaser" ...

Next time buy a USPS MO 🙂
Why exactly would that have been better?

Postal money orders are much much better. First off, they can be cashed at the PO for the 12yr old nubs that troll FS/FT... 😀

Secondly, with a receipt, if there's any sort of trolling to be done, you contact the local postmaster general and provide evidence, and they come down on the trolling part for Federal mail fraud. Nice nice.

Thirdly, when you have proof on a postal MO, and it doesn't get used, you just go into your PO and can get a refund without the hassel.

That's why in my FS/FT thread I use the USPS Postal Money Orders preferred tag. 🙂

Exactly what I was going to say. I had a USPS MO all filled out and ready to send to a trader. Got a PM before the mailman came by that said the part got damaged and the deal was off. Rats!! I thought. So, I took it back to the PO where I bought it and they refunded my $$ without a single problem. I had the receipt, the carbon flimsy in this case from the back of the MO, but she said even without that, since I had my name as payer, I could get a refund on it without any problem....and no fee. That made my mind up to ALWAYS use USPS MO's instead of anyone else's, esp. those from convenience stores.

I never fill out a money order.

I let them do it. Perhaps it can get stolen, but that's the risk I take for a money order...normally I only do CC or paypal for 3 figure+ purchases.

It's also why I no longer take checks. If I get passed a bad check, even if I have sufficient funds, my bank whacks me with $30 in charges.

don't forget the "used" part. not *used* for intended purpose.

does the western union website not address this issue? ok.. this addresses part of it.

8. Can I change the payee name after the money order has been completely filled out?

No, alterations cannot be made to a completed money order.

ok.. nothing seems to speficically address this issue.. 'cept this..

Other Questions?

(heh.. that may have overtaxed my quoting/linking abilities.. if that link doesn't work.. try the help link at western union's website)

surely you're not the first person to have this problem, it oughta be in the faq!

Damn, noted..

The post office's hours suck ass though....

7-11 just has a machine.. you give it money, and it spits out the money order... so convienent.. heh.

I haven't been able to find the receipt(haven't looked too hard tho), but on the front.. under the Purchaser Signature .. it's signed by me..... Is that proof enough that I bought it?
