What would you do if your boss asked you to start working on Saturdays? Say a Tuesday-Saturday shift or a half a day Friday and the other half on Saturday?

Would you tell them no and risk being fired or what?

As if there aren't 1,000 different situations where we can make an honest and informative decision based on yours.

I hated working like that. But for me it was Sunday-Thursday. Even though I had two days off, it never felt like the weekend.

A day off during the week is great for some, for example if you play golf you can enjoy fewer crowds on your weekday off.

I would probably not agree to do it. While it's nice to have some weekday time off to get regular life stuff done (ex. going to the bank or post office, getting a haircut, doctor's appointments, etc.), it's not much fun to be working when most of your family/friends are not. Sure, you're off Monday, but your buddy wants to hang out on Friday night and your wife and kids are off Saturday. You can't do anything because of work.

Having a day off in the week is nice. Gives you time to take care of business that you would other wise have to take a day off anyway.

One job I worked at, we worked one weekend a month, then took off two days in the week so we did not get overtime.

Tues-Sat, maybe but no way I'm driving into work for a half day twice every week. Right now I have the best of both worlds. Weekends off plus 1 day every 2 weeks, just need to work 9 hr days.

No way. I'd get fired and lose my job of 10 years (and a damn good reference), lounge around on unemployment for a while, ruin my credit, let my house go into foreclosure, burn through all my savings while becoming an alcoholic down at Ale Mary's, have my wife leave me to fuck somebody with a job, and end up reenacting scenes from Platoon with Charlie Sheen.

Or maybe I'd just work Saturdays.

I'd do it. As long as I have my two days off together, I don't care what days they are. Plus it would be nice not to have to ask for time off for doctor's appointments or other stuff that needs to be done during work hours.

I'd tell the boss he had better hire more people. Oh, and fuck off!

ask for additional compensation or other perk.

Well I did ask if I could work my normal 7-4 Mon. - Fri. then come in and pick up 4 extra hours of OT on Saturday. I reall have no reason to take off early during the week since my wife will be at work. I figure having a solid 8 hours of OT each paycheck won't be to bad.

You may end up paying all of that OT pay in taxes. Make sure it's worth it, before you do it.

Two half days are a no go. If I'm at work, I'm staying for the duration. My day's already ruined, so I might as well make some money. What do you do exactly? Why would working Saturday help the company?

I'm working Sunday-Wednesday right now and I love it.

working Friday/Saturday is for the birds, though. you can't go out Friday night because you'll have to worry about waking up early the next morning, and when Saturday night comes around, you'll be tired from working all day.

We have users that come in to play catch up so corporate wants a local tech here incase there are any problems help desk can't fix remotely. More than likely I'll be sitting around nerfing or watching movies on my phone. Sure it will be easy money but I can kiss going out of town with my wife or family bye.

My status at work would allow me to say no without the fear of losing my job.
But if i'd say yes, i'd be paid on double rate.

That sounds like it's on the slacking users. From a business point of view, it sounds like it would be a waste of money to have you go in on a non-working day just in case something happens to the people who should have had their work done during the normal week. I think anyone who goes in on Saturday should just accept what they get. If something goes tits up, that's just bad luck, and they can try again Monday. No reason to ruin your weekend, and pay you to babysit them.

Bingo. This is exactly how I feel.

I wouldn't mind too much if my weekend didn't fall on actual weekends. Would save me a bit of time/effort commuting since Sat and Sun usually have less traffic.

That said
I would be upset about working half day sat and half day fri ... and I would be upset if I didn't have 2 days in a row for a weekend.

You may end up paying all of that OT pay in taxes. Make sure it's worth it, before you do it.

Ok, how is that possible? If you get 1.5x time for OT and you assume the 35% bracket for the OT pay you take home 0.975x pay for those extra hours. If the rest of your tax burden for every other hour is less than 2.5% total then you get more pay per hour for OT even at the highest bracket. What am I missing here? With tax brackets no matter what happens if you make more gross you net more.

To the OP in my case no kids and wife isn't working right now means the weekend is when we make it but it seems like way more time is spent on Friday nights doing stuff with friends rather than Saturday leading to maybe missing some fun time if you have to be up early Saturday, if you can stroll in later on Saturday than a weekday though it might be ok.

It's what happens when you don't understand taxes.

I would tell them sorry I can't for religious reasons, and then make up a religion....
