aol was the one and only ISP we have ever had :disgust: now that im off at college and ive experienced a downloading speed of !GASP! 70Kb/s i dont think i could stand aol's "highspeed" (20Kb/s downloading) connection at home. my mom is getting sick of aol also and she has asked me to find her something to change to. now im partial to cable and i was thinking earthlink. but i honestly have no idea. what do some of you guys use? i had heard of people downloading at like 3-4Mb/s i think anything around 2-3 should be more than plenty. the catch is it has to be under $50 US. i live in northeast ohio. so any suguestions?

We need a location, the more precise the better. In most cases we can get away with your state.

Good site. Around here (Chicago) SBC dsl is a good route to go, especially at 20-30 bucks. Comcast cable is decent too, but you'll want to get some info from locals on cable.

Earthlink DSL is very expensive around 50 buck a month and they give you free dsl modem and linksys router for 10 buck more. You get 30 buck for first 6 months then 50 after that. they also give you back up dialup number in case dsl goes down but for up to 8 hours.
Now I have a Verizon DSL for 30 buck a month. It is good service but no backup dialup number.

Other than MSN, almost anything is better than YOL (Yuppies On Line)!

I use and oerfer DSL (if you are in range).. No 4-8pm bottlenecks as cable has!

In most cases Cable "Bottle neck" is still must faster than DSL.

Cable tends to be be far more expensive than DSL. Comcast here charges $42.95 per month for customers, $58.95 for non-customers. Verizon DSL is $29.95 per month. That's easy math to do. Yeah, cable download speeds are a bit better, at 4-5Mb, but with DSL topping out at 3Mb (I'm only on 1.5), the speed difference isn't worth the price difference IMHO.

As previous poster said, cable is only $40/month for cableTV subscribers, and they usualy have these crazy deals where you get the first 3-6 months free + free installation + free cable modem.
