When they fire it up they are going to get a resonance cascade and open a wormhole to Xen.

I care.

Even after they do fire it up, though, it'll be months of testing and then years until we see anything... and then it'll be like when they found the top quark. How much has your life changed since (because) they found the top quark??

I seen something on the history channel about them putting this thing together. Looked interesting, although I have no idea what's its purpose is.

The article doesnt say anything about that damage from the screwup in the magnet design? Hmm maybe it wasnt that bad and they've already fixed it?

From the article:

...60-megapixel digital camera taking 40 million pictures a second...

Crap, thats alot of data.

Well, if the Planck Length is bigger than we think, we may all soon be dead. ;)

After reading all 6 pages of the linked article, I feel really stupid  and have a headache. Hadron? Muon? Boson? Are those rock bands? :p

What are the practical applications of this knowledge? This is indeed really cool, mind blowing really, but it seems like the world has quite a few problems that could use the benefit of the money that went into building the collider

This is basic research where there end result is not known, it could possibly change the world, nobody knows until we get there. I'd say it's more about the process of getting there than the end result though, as much scientific research is.

it's texas. their priority is and has never been science, regardless of their political affiliation. I worked for BNL (AGS and later RHIC) from 1999 till 2004 and each year into the RHIC run the congress cut our budget to a point it was almost pointless to cool down the machine, because we only had enough in our budget for a few week run.

The world will always have those problems though, no matter how much money you throw at them. Look at Africa aid for example.

Science and technology on the other hand, has significantly improved our standard of living and put us into a position where we can aid those other world issues. :)

Actually, the SSC was canceled under Clinton:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superconducting_Super_Collider

Yeah, but Clinton tried to save it.

However, in 1993, Clinton attempted to prevent the cancellation by requesting that Congress continue "to support this important and challenging effort" through completion because "abandoning the SSC at this point would signal that the United States is compromising its position of leadership in basic science..." What kind of problems are you talking about? (that could use the money)

why can't we spend all the money and figure out a way to make a new source of power. Something crazy like this but for the production of power...kinda like in spiderman.

Just how do you anticipate they would find a way to do this? Through science, perhaps? So are you trying to suggest they spend money researching science to learn new things, and that, perhaps, in the newly found knowledge they might discover some way humanity can benefit? ;):p:D

Without research and discovery you have nothing to work with.

That is exactly what they are doing. Probing to learn more. Baby steps, people.
