MOHAA & QIII, No EAX in 5.1...

I have an Xgamer 5.1 Soundblaster card and a 5.1 speaker system. Unreal Tournament and Thief 2, both games came with my soundcard, sound great and work perfectly with my 5.1. Now MOHAA does not take use of the 5.1 even though I have the speakers set to surround and the sound quality on high it does nothing. I have found no patch for it nor any other boards with this topic.

Quake III doesn't support 5.1 either which saddens me because everything about that game rocks except no EAX is supported! I downloaded some patch that promised EAX but did nothing. Any help on either game would be appreciated immensely.

there isn't a whole lot you can do!

There is a hack for getting MOHAA to work with EAX2, but it breaks some of the other sound feature's in the game....

The good news is that id software has some serious talent working on the sound for their next engine, with the promise of full 5.1 /eax2, etc, etc..

I don't get it. What exactly is your complaint? That you don't get sound from the center speaker? Or that neither Q3A nor MOHAA come with EAX 3d audio acceleration? They are two distinct issues.

For games that do not have surround (or 5.1/6.1) support encoded into the sound renderer, you need to enable Creative Multi-Speaker Support (CMSS) in the AudioHQ to get emulated sound from the center speaker. For 3d audio using EAX, you're out of luck 'cause the developer never bothered to incorporate it into the sound engine. Very few Q3A engine games have 3d audio support (FAKK2 and Alice comes to mind, but that's about it). Also, having support for 3d audio acceleration does not guaranteee that you have 5.1 or surround support either. You still need to enable CMSS to get sound from the center speaker.

Q3A did come with A3D 2.0 support initially, but was dropped in later patches 'cause it wasn't worth the time and effort for Id to update. For Q3A and similiar games, you're better off using the Quake2 environment preset than the Aureal A2d patch (which is buggy as hell and causes massive performance hit).

Yeah why are you complaining that you cant get EAX support in games that dont support it is beyond me. sigh

Don't get pissed guys. I was just curious. I thought MOHAA would sound like UT. UT sounds awesome and all I get from MOHAA is stereo sound at best, barely any rear sound ever. Why the hell is everyone always pissed at me? I left a msg on planetquake and everyone basically wanted to slaughter me.

Not pissed at all. Just trying to understand the problem. The "angry" icon gets selected by default and is carried over to the next thread. Anyway, when you enable CMSS, you should be able to correct the output problem with your 5.1 speakers. Nothing you can do about EAX support though.
