In all his posts about partitioning, the one thing he ALWAYS brought up was that the only way to backup data was to keep it on external media.

"meh, I'll just copy all the stuff I wanna backup to a separate partition. That way if I have to format my drive, I'll still have all my stuff"

I went out last night and my computer was fine, when I came home, I see that my computer has restarted and is frozen at the drive auto-detection after POST.

"Weird" I think, so I restart.

"clink, clink, clink..."












...clunk

Drive dead, all my information (phone numbers, contact lists, emails, mp3's (4gb), etc... gone.

All gone

Well, I keep a backup of updates, patches, mp3's, IE favorites, ICQ contact list, and email files on both my drives as well as cd backup.

Try to boot up on a floppy disc and access your drive from there. What drive is it anyway?

There are many data recovery services but they cost $$$ and it'll take time.

Backup partition? On the same hard drive drive? Not a good idea. A second hard drive as a back up would work well though.

Unless your controller freaks and corrupts the data on both. I've had this happen.

after taking the drive out of the computer and plugging it in over and over and kinda slamming it on the table in rage, I tried it one more time...

The drive was detected and boot into windows. so far, most programs I've opened dont work anymore, but right now, my data is being burned to CDR...

Drive is an older 5400 rpm 13gb maxtor. It is formatted in NTFS, so I couldnt boot with a floppy.

I backup to another HD on a seperate controller and onto a server I have access to as a part of my job, which is itself backed up daily onto tape.

I would definately backup to media if I didn't have the server to use.

I have a separate hard drive drive for my MP3s and some things that I needed to back up, but really, I should back that up too onto CDRs. I could make a few big ol' zip files! Oh, I actually do have a CDR with stuff that I backed up because I ran out of room on that hard drive...darn MP3s. Although, the truly important stuff that I simply cannot lose, such as my email and word documents for school, I have backed up on both. I also keep backups of programs...of course, not the whole program, but just the installer so when I format (and, as a tweaker, this can be very frequent at times) I don't need to go hunting around to find it.

Of course, I back up to CD-Rs (RWs). Weekly; daily if necessary.

It makes no sense to use a partition on the same drive to restore from a drive hardware failure. You need separate media for that. It is a great way to restore from a software issue. Here is an example. I recently upgraded my OS from 98SE to win2K Pro. Knowing things don't always go as planned, I Ghosted an image of my Windows partition to my backup partition (about a 10 min operation). I did the 2K upgrade. It went very smoothly. After awhile I noticed some sound issues in a few games. I did some checking and it turned out my soundcard drivers were not 100% with Win2K and DX8. After a couple of days, I decided to go back to 98SE. I restored the Ghost image back to the primary windows partition (another 10 min operation), and booted up in 98 like nothing ever happened. This is the proper application of backing up partitions on the same media.
