Modstream or Powerstream

Title says it all.

Is the modstream or the powerstream better in terms of performance (not considering that one is modular). Im looking for a stable psu with 24 pins or 20+4... Im pretty sure these are both very good but which one would be better for overclocking. I wouldnt mind going with non-modular as long as theres an increase in stability/performance or whatnot

I've been quite pleased with my Powerstream 600, and its under a pretty damn heavy load.
 
The Powerstream is definitley better performance-wise over the Modstream. That's not to say that the Modstream isn't powerful either. However, if you are looking to overclock and push your system as much as it can go, I would say go with the Powerstream.
 
Powerstream > Modstream for an OC PSU... lots of better values for your money out there in the PSU world though IMO, unless you gotta have that secksy nickel plate box.
 
I can get a OCZ Technology PowerStream 420W Power Supply With Adjustable Power Rails With LED Indicators for $86 not shipped.

I used some wattage calculators and im guessing ill need about 350 watts when everything is under full load. Is this PSU good?
 
$85 is too much to pay for a Topower PSU in my opinion. Check out Seasonic, Forton Source or the PCP&C Silencer line.

Yeah, if you are looking for a PSU in the $80-$100 range, there are better options, but among the high end PSU's (>$150), the OCZ's are pretty good.

I have the 420W power stream, its nice. Its not so much as wattage that you need to be concerned about, its more the amps on the 12v rail. Many quality 350w power supplies are better than cheap 500w ones because the 500w ones have ~18a on the 12v rail, which simply isn't enough to power a modern computer.

THe 420w powerstream should handle almost any system, except maybe dual 6800gts.

That's a modern misconception; 18amps on the 12v rail is enough for just about any single CPU/GPU configuration you can put together. More power is fine but it's getting to the point of being pretty ridiculous, nobody can really use 500-600 watt PSU's.

Either way no matter what the price range I think you can do better then OCZ, OCZ is nothing but well marketed Topower after all.
 
Does the powerstream not have a PCI express connection? If you get a powersteam, do you just use the cable the card provides, hook that into the 4 pin on the mobo and then the other end of the 4 pin into the PSU?
 
My Enermax 470watt (think they make a 480watt now) was $83 shipped, and it's stable as hell. It has dual 12v rails (16A and 15A) and really looks good :thumbsup:. What kind of computer are you buying? THat enermax should be enough to handle all but the most demanding systems.
 
im very pleased with my OCZ powerstream 600W, its under a lot of load. stable rails, and if they go below spec, then you can always bump them up. 😉
 
I bought this Enermax for the new rig (and I fully realize it's overkill, but that's ok). For under $100 you might like this, it's essentially my PSU's little brother. Big fat rails, 20+4 connector... my PSU came with a dedicated SATA harness and an adapter to turn the 8 pin server board plug into a 6 pin PCI-E video connector. I'm guessing the 465 would come with the same stuff since it's in the same product line. My Enermax is very quiet too - no fan noise whatsoever comes out of it, just slightly warm air.
 
Noisetakers are dual +12V rail, the EGxxxP-VE series are single rail. The idea behind dual rails is to isolate the CPU/motherboard +12v feed from the other +12v devices in the system, which is supposed to deliver cleaner power to the CPU/mobo. It's not a bad idea, but many of us feel that a big single rail is better for OCing since there's less possibility of overextending the +12v rail dedicated to the CPU/mobo, causing its voltage to drop. This is more of an issue with people building SLI rigs, which I'm not, but who knows what I'll be doing in a year or two, so I went with a big fat single rail PSU.
