That sucks I wish they would hit 100 bucks for one even a gig one :( I would buy one in a heartbeat I love my S30 sport mp3 player but jeeze the upgrade cards get expensive what good is a mp3 player that can hold up to 576 Megs when a 256 meg SD Card is 60 bucks+ and a 512 is over a 100 dollars :\ rather just get a gig player for 100-150 and save myself small parts to lose hell after my lil semi-rant I might get one of these minis if they drop to 199 rather see them at 149 tho

$29? I call BS on that one.

Look at the prices of MicroDrives, battery packs, & all the other technology that goes into one.

No way in hell they can build it for $29.

Even if it DID only cost $29 to actually build, there's far more to profit than just the cost of building the product.

ever been to factories in china?
the cost might be even less (those 29 bucks probably even include shipping and taxes to the US)
and maybe some marketing costs

the reason they dont price it at like $99 is because they want to go to a price competition with other mp3 players.
and they WANT to establish the ipod as the niche item. Apple focus on value competition instead of price competition..

you dont have to believe me, but this professor of mine is real.

Drop the price to $149, include USB 2.0 (not sure if it already supports that) and add an FM digital tuner and I'll buy one.

It probably does cost them $29 to make. BUT that doesn't take in to the account the marketing, research and 101 other things they spent on the thing to get it to market. No way does that $29 include the 4Gb drive right? And then the headphones and other things that go in to the product.

The marketing has to take a fat chunk of the overall cost. No one would buy if they didn't know it exisited.

Considering that it costs Apple ~$100-150 for the 4gb HD, I don't see where you're professor is getting $29 from.

Lay off the crack. Unless apple is manufacuring the drives themselves with elves and using magic to get the raw materials the drive itself costs more than $29. In bulk quantities those drives cost at least $100, apple isn't getting it much cheaper even if they negotiated it below the 100,000 quantity prices.

I swear common sense is dead.

I believe that there is a huge markup,

But i dont know about that huge

Here is my favorite.

A sony CD player for a car here

The player retails for $649.99

If you work at BestBuy you can pick this beauty up for $187.96 on your discount :D
And BestBuy is still making money off that.
which means the distributor is still making money off of BestBuy

If thats not markup then i'll be a monkeys uncle

so I will hold buying the new ipods..

god they have EXTREMELY big profit margin...
You do realise that it's $29 for the RAW MATERIALS, correct? By the time labor, advertising, selling and administrative expense, plant overhead and machinery (among other things) are factored in you're probably looking at a per-unit cost that is over $100 initially.

Maybe for the raw parts. Put together and placed on a store shelf, the IPOD costs more than $29 to Apple.
