Here is an Article about Gateway Computers abandoning AMD chips in their systems (from ZDNet's AnchorDesk). This has been discussed/posted before but this article has some interesting facts.

Some quotes from the article:

"It isn't just that Gateway is one of AMD's biggest customers. What makes it hurt worse is what preceded it: Gateway actually follows two other PC makers--IBM and Micron PC, which also recently parted ways with AMD."

"...that leaves only Hewlett-Packard and Compaq among the top five PC makers still sourcing from AMD. And there's even a cloud in that silver lining. Once HP and Compaq merge, they'll probably rationalize their product lines, thus foreshadowing more bad news for AMD."

"Separately, AMD announced it will furlough 2,300 workers and shutter two fabrication facilities. With the news, its stock took a battering, plunging nearly 8 percent to $9.08."

Seems like pretty bad news for AMD. Can they rebound from this? Who will be buying their chips now? Will prices go up on their product lines?

I hate to see this, Intel needs some serious competition and AMD was the only ones who gave it to them. We all know we don't need ANOTHER monopoly in the computer business!
🙁

hope their stock dip down to $1 dollar
and when i spent every single money on AMD stock
then only then it rise up to $100 dollar

<< I think it is a repost... or maybe i read it somewhere else... yes it is bad for AMD. And consumers. >>

Yea, I couldn't remember where, but I did read certain parts about this article before. I did a search on "AMD" and "Gateway" but didn't find any results in any of the forums here so I thought I would post this.

I would have thought your reply would be a lot more harsh with a name like "Truculent"!!!! (hee, hee).

Why are you using past tense in this sentence???😛

AMD is obviously still here and still competing very well with Intel when it comes to price and performance. I've read my fair share of news articles forecasting the end of AMD over the years, but they are still here giving Intel a run for its money🙂

As you probably noticed, AMD is showing more effort when it comes to advertising/marketing. I think their PR rating might help them, but than again, it might not. Only time will tell. AMD has to do something to get through to the average consumer that AMD CAN and IS competing very nicely with Intel CPUs. If only more consumers would visit places such as Anandtech, they would KNOW that AMD can lay the smack down on an equivalently clocked Intel CPU, and AMD has the lower prices too🙂

The PR rating coupled with the naming their next line of processors Athlon XP might just appeal to the average consumer, but like I said before, only time will tell.

I think it is a repost...

Yes. It's the fourth one in the last 24 hours, that I've seen. As for spelling the end of AMD...it certainly indicates that the bad economy is hitting them where it counts, but I don't think they'll go out of business. Remember, a company has to post a loss for them to go into bankruptsy. I think this will be the first quarter that AMD has seen a loss since 99'. Not only that, but the value of their property and other assets is almost greater than their share price making them a takeover target. I can see AMD being bought or merging, but not failing altogether.

Click search and in the Keyword box put AMD and under Forum Categories select General Hardware only, and click the search button.

Well, my bad!!! I thought you could search on more than one Keyword at the same time (Gateway and AMD). I'll ask mods to lock. Learned the hard way. Sorry. (First major mistake here).

(Guess thats why they say "Keyword", and not "Keywords") What would it take to have more than one word in search engine?

look at my post in the news section about this as this is the first instance of it, right.

Gateway was just having excess baggage with AMD, they never advertised them in magazines or made them look like their number one system, so it figures.

Like it matters, Gateway themselves look like they will go away alltogether soon anyhow. If HP/Compaq wants to give competition to DELL, they need to stop selling indirectly in places like best buy. But that goes against everything. But the alternative is worse, letting DELL put you out of business.
