Mods can help self-moderation

I wrote a topic in here a few weeks back asking mods to consider commenting whenever they lock a thread. That thread was locked with no comment (ha ha).

Seriously, when someone makes a mistake, let them know what they did wrong. It takes a few seconds and would decrease the bandwidth from people asking "what happened?" in this forum. Also, those offenders would know not to repeat the behaviors that resulted in the locked thread, which will decrease the number of violations.

Is this an unreasonable request?

---

Sometimes we PM or email an explanation. Sometimes the reason for a lock should be obvious. Sometimes, there is just too much worse stuff going on, and we do not have time to post the reason.

I guess sometimes the mods think the lock is self-explanatory. At any rate, some will comment, some won't.

I think its just their attitude at the time. It only takes seconds to write a short remark. I've seen some mods in HD post some excellent lock explanations, especially to newbies. And some are just in permanantly bad moods: Link

Some of us lock threads without comment because.... well we arent moderators and it might give us away. I once did a deal with an Elite member on the ForSale forums, and he must have dropped his Moderator Lock button in the bottom of the box when packing it. Ive been having a blast locking threads here and there ever since... 😉

Seriously, they often lock what is self explanatory, an obvious violation of the rules, an obvious flame bait, and they often just do not need comment. And as others have eluded to, they just aren't obligated to appease the masses on individual decisions. If they weren't doing the right thing they wouldn't be doing the job. You just have to trust thier judgement and realize they have thousands of threads to moderate daily.... and no one, well almost no one is perfect.. 🙂

I believe the mods do a great job -- just look at how many people visit the forums and post responsibly. Of course mods are not obligated to justify their actions, this is a private board and they can do what they wish. However, a simple statement would give everyone an idea of an innappropriate topic, with the reason, and probably prevent similar posts in the future.

BTW, I appreciate the mod's comment on the first post.
