Modern looking thermostat

The place we're moving into has one of those old style mechanical programmable thermostats, where you snap the plastic pieces around the dial to change temperature settings for night and day. That's great and all, but the tabs are broken, it uses a battery to run that function, and pretty much looks like a 40's vestige from when the house was built.

I'm looking for something 21st century-looking. Touchscreen, flat, recessed into the wall, backlit. Obviously, programmable. Does anything like that exist?

The closest I came was some blog post on a Honeywell concept, it was basically just a black version of their current touch screens, and I haven't even seen it for sale.

Any ideas?

Check your local home improvement store. There are a wide range of programmable thermostats available.

Just a reminder. There are many more sources for information other than the intarwebs. :)

Wow you have one with trippers? :Q

Do you need timed setback? If not just replace it with a regular 'stat and hang a picture over it. T87F forever! :D

I doubt they will ever design a recessed thermostat. There are vents, top and bottom, for the sensors to determine the temperature in the room. There are many nice looking programmabes out there, just need to do some research.

It's possible but very expensive for the homeowner. The "thermostat" would be nothing more than an interface device for the homeowner to monitor and control whatever they want. (damper motor windows, economizers, pool and spa temperatures, etc.) It would be connected back to a central hub which has remote sensors. This is usually integrated into a multi zoned system and probably handles security and monitoring as well. (possible to bring up cameras on the LCD, etc.)

I'm really just talking about a thermostat, same as the mechanical one, but with a nicer interface. I wonder if it'd be that difficult to buy something like the Honeywell linked in this thread and repackage it into something a little bit nicer. It's a lot of money for an experiment, but I might give it a shot.

It's not that difficult. The wiring depends on your heating/cooling set up. If you have a heat pump there will be extra lines for the reversing valve solenoid and the auxiliary heat contactor.

Just make sure you get one with the correct numbers of heating and cooling zones for your application. Honeywell sells many different versions of their thermostats

This is a thermostat. All the rest are just fancy pretenders. :p I can't help it, nothing else looks "right" to me.

Better price on the Honeywell.

We actually installed an electronic thermostat in our apartment, but the name eludes me at the moment. It starts with the letter L and only has a few letters in the name. It's backlit, electronic, and fully programmable. We picked it up at our local Home Depot for about $80 and it's been nothing but a blessing.

LUX! That's it! :p This is what we have!!!
