Moderators here arguing

mancunian

Senior member
The title says it all.

I am getting a little tired of two moderators here (who shall remain nameless) who seem to like to take each other on, more often than not in the video forum.

Guys, whatever problem you might or might not have with one another, please take it to PM instead of trying to score points (publicly) on here. It sends out completely the wrong message to other users.

Pissing contests make me stop reading. I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks that.

Seems to me they are posting as members and not in their capacity as Moderators.
Yeah I don't have any problem with it. I just happened to run across that thread earlier and figured that might be what the OP was talking about.

Not everyone will see eye to eye. As long as they aren't using mod powers in their discussions, they are free to post as members as anyone else here.

BFG10K, myself, and many other members occasionally get into heavy discussions. You'll note that I said "members". Because we are. We are "also moderators". But never simultaneously.

You are absolutely correct.

If the mods want to post as individuals, they should get another name.
A cop is a cop, in and out of uniform.

Did you think pissing contests in threads are exclusive to members who are also moderators?
Take a look around sometime. And by the way, nothing is absolute.

Does this mean we are pissing now? 😉

That would be great but the Admin decided that it won't be that way.

It would be hilarious to see a mod break out the ban stick on another mod.

That being said...it looks like these guys were having a valid discussion. They both have knowledge of the area they are discussing and feel that they are experts. Experts rarely agree on things.

Even product reviews on Newegg turn into much more heated debates than what was linked to. If you want one sided reviews without any conflict, check out the video section on the front page.

i'm not sure it'd be great (but olds is right -- we decided that mods would be members with additional capabilities and that it would be our goal to separate their operation as mods and members). also moderators are not cops. they are moderators.

you can't make mods not be members because then they wouldn't want to be mods (our mods are participants first and we pick from helpful members).

anonymous moderation sort of "fixed" that issue, but the cure was worse than the disease in that case.

The problem is some of these threads get to the point that a mod should come in to warn the members to know it off or lock the thread. Since, they are the moderators, nothing happens.

And this crap is why I don't frequent the forum as much anymore. If the forum is interested in attracting new members, this crap certainly provides reason not to.

So do you mean that moderators should not participate in forum debates/arguments/discussions? Whatever you wish to call them? Do you think that is fair?

BFG and I ended our debate on our own accord. We had sense enough to stop the discussion before it got anywhere near out of hand.

This is sort of like you actually saying that mods deserve special treatment, and not in the good way. Singling us out "because" we are mods is unfair. Especially when no rules/guidelines were broken in our discussion. And when we saw that it could possibly go way off topic, we stopped.

I have found that there is really no way to make everyone happy. Proven truer everyday.

Let's make one thing clear, the point of this topic was not to flame anybody or suggest that they may be abusing their powers. This is not the case at all. Moderators are human like anybody else and as such, cannot be held up in some kind of untouchable light. Fortunately, that does not seem to be the case here. And the fact that they participate is even better, because all of them seem to be knowledgeable and happy to help. Plus, it lets the rest of us know that they are around, which is absolutely necessary if the place is to remain a civilised knowledge exchange, that everybody feels they can participate in.

The point was this: whenever I read a thread and I constantly see replies from 2 posters, be they moderators or otherwise, it tends to make me stop reading the thread. It's a sort of message tennis and all too often, can lead away from what the OP was trying to say. It doesn't always and can often be helpful to the OP, but more often than not it doesn't *tend* to be.

The thread linked above came across at times as arguing semantics rather than discussing the point in question, that is merely my opinion. However, Keys edited his message and apologised for the OT, realising what was going on, and BFG duly obliged by no longer replying to Keys.

Me saying it was perhaps sending out the wrong message was more directed at lurkers or potential members, seeing the word 'Moderator' under such posts might not give the impression one would hope. It isn't the case for the rest of us who mighta been around here for a couple of years or more, as we both know Keys and BFG (now that the 2 names have been mentioned elsewhere in this thread) to be two people whose opinions we want to read. We also know their 'personalities' from the time prior to them becoming moderators, so can see why they would like to debate a point.

Perhaps this post clears up what I meant. Again, it is merely an opinion.

This is not true, send a PM or email to either Anandtech Moderator or to DerekWilson and if it is truly warranted, it will be shut down like any other discussion would. We are not above punishment.

Lol, you are entitled to your opinion and unlike the odd member on this forum, you can actually present it without being an a$$.

It was just something I noticed that made me stop reading a thread.

But if most here disagree, fair enough.

😀

I know, as if anyone really gives a sh!t about mods fighting, it will settle when they get fired from the administrator or somethin' - as if we'll ever hear about it.

I say, come in to anandtech.com and do your stuff, then get the hell out so you can move on with your life. anyone got a better idea?

I wish there were more arguments here as civil and informed as the one you've linked to, OP. Most arguments here immediately (and I'm not excluding myself here at all, in fact I'm one of the worst offenders) degenerate into "You're a jerk!" "YOU'RE a jerk!" "Your face is a jerk!!!" type discussions.

If the mods were fighting like that, I'd see your point. Instead, they merely disagreed with each other. Saying they're not allowed to do that would be ridiculous.
