Modems locks up win98 :(

it's a v.90 56k pci lite winmodem (prime peripherals)

At first I thought it was a irq prob but if it was I would think that the problem would occur more often or consistently. I would say I get that awful blue screen once out of every 5 times I try to connect to the internet.

I have installed the latest via drivers but that didn't help.

Someone mentioned to me it could be a software conflict but i'm not sure how to diagnose that.

It could be a problem with the software, but I wouldn't necessarily call this problems a "conflict". Just crappy drivers.

It does sound like an IRQ conflict to me though. How are you verifying that it isn't? You're not relying on just Windows Device Mgr, are you?

Modems, even software ones, don't like sharing IRQ's with anything, let alone a resource hungry device like a SBLive.

Two thing you can do. One, move the SBLive or modem to another PCI slot. You may need to do this once or twice to find the correct one since some PCI slots are shared. Two, disable your serial ports in the BIOS unless you're actually using a serial device. This will free two additional IRQ's for you to play with.
 
I disabled those 2 serial ports, but a hour after that it locked up again 🙁

could it be the cpu is running to hot?? It's a tbird 1.2ghz , right now the cpu temp is 51C and the system temp is 26C. The board is abit kt7aRAID

did you irq settings fot the sb &amp; modem change after you disabled your com ports? if they didn't, it could be that the two cards are in a shared slot ie 2 slot sharing one irq, so move one of the cards to another slot! 🙂

yes but both devices still share the same irq leading me to believe they both occupy a shared slot.
suggest you move one card from its present slot &amp; check the irqs again to see that they each have a different irq! 🙂

that looks a bit better even though your modem is sharing with your ethernet adaptor. the two are more likely to share without problems.
what's using irq 9? is it free?
if you're still getting blue screens, suggest you force the modem to use irq 9(if free) in bios &amp; set PnP OS to no! 🙂
