modem will not disconnect????

I installed the new Earthlink 5.0 internet software after dropping MSN 8 which is running on Windows XP - for some reason when I try to disconnect it wouldn't let me and I end up pulling the phone card off the wall in order to use the phone. The two interconnected monitor symbols would disappear from lower right hand corner but still stays connected.
Please help me in what I should do. Thanks in advance.
