modem troubles...

I've got an old computer, with an even older modem. It's an internal ISA modemsurfr 56k from motorola. It was working fine in a Pentium 166 machine running Windows 98. Got a new machine with PII 350. Fresh install of Windows 98, detects the modem fine. But I can not do anything with the modem. In the modem properties page, clicking on Diagnostics gives : "The computer is not receiving a response from the modem. Check that the modem is plugged in, and if necessary, turn the modem off, and then turn it back on." In the bios, com3 is disabled. Modem is installed on com3. There are no shared resources or conflicts of any kind. I've tried moving it to a different slot, and after a couple reformats and installs, NOTHING. Another thing, when restarting or shutting down from windows 98, you can hear the modem "hanging up sound". But during boot there is no "picking up sound". I've tried messing around with various bios settings, but nothing works. Any suggestions?

One more thing. When this modem was in the previous computer, when you disconnect the line would be "dead" until you unplugged the phone line from the wall. I read somewhere that this could be caused by lightning/power surge. Even so, why would it work in the old machine and not this one?

In my experience, it's a pain to deal with modems... Is this a PNP modem? (Plug and play) Cause you may have better luck at least if your win98 is 98se.... to have windows do the setting up of the com port and such. I usually stick with Com 2 cause it's the least likely to be conflicting with anything. And I have had a ton of people I know get their phone line tapped by a power surge due to lightening and such and usually they are SOL. The most common symptom though is trying to dial and having the comp say "No dial tone" even if you can hear it over the speakers.... IF the modem is causing the line to be dead, I suggest investing in a cheap PCI modem if you've got PCI slots... or an ISA one... Usually a hot deal or two about cheap modems... TAL

It is plug and play. I had problems similar to this with another ISA modem from USRobotics, but eventually got it to work (unfortunately, it was later killed by lightning). I think I'll just fork over $50 for a win-modem and hopefully the problem will go away....

Try playing with the IRQ settings in the BIOS. This worked a couple of times on different pootas, but once did screw up the BIOS settings on another poota.
