Modem question.

My brother just moved out of the house, and I no longer need the router since i'm the only one who uses the cable now.

I was told by my cable company I can just connect through just the modem itself. I tried it earlier and I can never get a connection with it. It should just be simple as pie right? Just put my cable from my card, connected into the modem.. right?

I'm a newb when it comes to networking, so any help is appreciated.

As far as the physical connection goes, yes, all you need to do is plug the modem directly into the ethernet port on your computer.

However, there are several reasons why you probably don't want to do this: (number 2 is the most important in my opinion)

1) The fact that you can't connect this way tells me that your ISP is likely using MAC filtering and they are not allowing the MAC address on your PC's network card establish a connection to their system. To fix this you would need to call the ISP and have them add your network card to their allowed list.

2) Connecting a PC directly to a cable or DSL broadband connection is practically BEGGING for hackers and viruses to invade your computer. Leaving the router in place, even if your PC is the only one connected to it, will allow the internal hardware firewall in your router do its job and protect you from many 'unwanted visitors'.

3) If you ever need to have additional computers connected to the cable modem, you'll have to put the router back anyway, so you might as well leave it in place.

You probably need a crossover cable (or, if you're using a crossover, get a straight through).

Keep the router, it blocks a lot of crap coming in from the cable.

I forgot to add that I play a online game called City of Heroes, and somtimes I'll get disconnected from the game.

Their CSR told me to either download the firmware or run straight through the cable modem. I guess that was bad advice eh?

I guess i'll try the firmware, because I don't think my brother ever updated it.
