I am working on a computer which will not dial-up. I have tried many thing. It recognizes the modem, and its in the right port. It says no dial tone. I have switched the modems, same thing. I have deleted and reinstalled it a billion times, and still nothing. I have went over and over with the settings, and I just cant figure it out. My phone line does work, the dail-up works on my other computer, so it is not the ISP. Does anyone have any ideas?? Thanks 🙂

Try a different cord and make sure it is plugged in firmly. Also, did you run diagnostics on the modem from the control panel?

Are the two computers running the same version of Windows?

I had a modem that worked great in Windows 98. When I moved it to a Windows 2000 computer and found the right drivers, the modem was detected and tried to dial out, but it couldn't detect the dial tone. So, I just had to get a new modem for my 2000 system. 🙁

Can you actually hear your dial tone when you dial out or is your modem actually not even getting to the point where it tries to use the line to dial out? What I mean is can you tell if the modem works or is it just your settings when it dials. Do you have turn off call waiting checked in the internet settings.

If the modem has two jacks, plug an extension phone into the appropraite jack and check for dial tone. I had a brand new modem fresh out of the box that failed this test. Same problem, error messages about no dial tone.

If this is a replacement modem and the previous modem was a winmodem, you will have to do a thorough uninstall of the previous drivers to get the new modem to work.

You've got a lot of good suggestions in these posts to keep you busy. 🙂

Thanks Everyone for all the help and suggestions you have given me......I got the problem taken care of.....I had gotten a used modem (first mistake) and installed it...and it wasnt until I installed another modem, that I figured out that the modem was bad. It was just a weird experience because it was reading the modem was there, and it would dial up, but had no dial tone.....glad that project is done.....THANKS AGAIN FOR THE HELP!!!! 🙂
