Modem prob?

Hi, I'm on 56K dialup. I've got a IBM T40 laptop. Now, I've had a bit of a prob with my modem these few days. I'm not too sure if it's a prob with the modem hardware itself or a software prob. Sometimes it connects to the net ok. Other times it says - dialtone not detected. I've tried deselecting 'Wait for dialtone', etc. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. I've tried upgrading the drivers, etc. No difference. I hope this is a software prob. Is there a way I can check if there is a prob with my modem hardware?
