Modem on Com 3 - but Com 3 not properly recognized...

Hi all:

I have a 56.6k U.S.R. Sporster modem installed on the Asus A7M 266 mobo, running Win 98 SE. The modem is recognized - drivers installed, etc, but the connect speed stays limited to 26,6. The e-Machine (not mine) right next to it connects at 33,6 so its not line probs.

In modem properties, the max connect speed is set to 115,000 so I think its a com port speed issue.

But in the System Properties, I only have Com 1 and Com 2 shown, and under Modem Properties, more info - the port info shows as:

Port: COM3
Interrupt: 10
Address: 0
UART: (greyed out with no info)
Highest Speed: No Response

I installed the Bus drivers from the Asus disc which cleared up other issues, but nothing else stands out - no errors or question marks in the system properties, etc...

Help! 🙂

The Com 3 not showing is normal for that type of modem (WinModem). If the modem dials and connecte then it is installed properly. The slower connection speed is related to the dirvers and the Line quality. You more than likely will not get a better connection with that modem. But, you can try going to the USR website and try getting updated drivers. Also, get a real long phone cord and connect the modem directly to the jack where the phone line enters the House/Appartment. At least you'll know if there is a problem with the internal wiring of the residence.
