Modem not connecting

I had an old dell lying around that I decided to reformat yesterday(pentiumII 350mhz windows98se). After reinstalling everything worked great... Almost. The first time I tried to dial up the internet worked fine, but when I disconnect and tried to reconnect, I got an error saying the modem could not be detected.😕 No matter what I do I can't get connected after I've already disconnected. Only when I restart the computer does it work again, but still only on the first try. I'm confused to hell right now, do any of you know what this problem is? PLEASE HELP!
Thanks.

If it's one of the USR's winmodms with voice go the the Start up (msconfig) and make sure that the USR software is checked. I had the same problem with a clients Puter and XP.

uncheck it and uninstall the Modem...then reboot and Windows should detect it. If that won't do it then manually install it and make sure that you choose the voice Modem not the Fax as there will be 2 choices.

In the past I've had to move the modem to another PCI slot and it worked... Why??? I'll never know. Worth a shot though.
