Modem dialtone problem

Hey again..I just wanna thank all of you for helping me build my first system....I have one problem though...I own a Diamond Supra Max 56k USB modem. When I go to connect it gives me an error stating that there is no dial tone. I hooked a phone up to the same line and got a dialtone so we know its not the line. I checked all the cables...the drivers are installed...i went through diamonds tech support and windows tech suport. I am stuck..Please help me out

I have had much better luck throwing the modem at com4. Tried to make the modem communicate under modem properties?

is the phone line in the port labeled line?

yes, i have done it before where i put in in the port called phone. cuz well, its hte phone line. =)

Also, disable the "Detect Dial-Tone" option in the DUN or modem properties. My dial-tone beeps two times before it sustains itself, and this fooled my modem. I disabled dial-tone detection, and my modem dialed like normal without any problems.

I had to put three commas(,,,) in front of my old dialup number to create a pause so that the modem could "hear" the dialtone or I would get the same error.

haha yup the line is in the right port. and I did disable he wait on dial tone. Nothing seems to work. I get this far building my pc and I get stuck because it cant detect the dial tone...wow Please any more suggestions

Did you do "communicate with modem" under modem properties?

Also, try the init string 'AT&FW2X3'. This forces the modem to stop looking for the dialtone. I had a very similar problem not so long ago, and this worked for me

For win2k:
control panel, modem and phone options, modems tab, properties of your modem, advanced tab and enter the string without the quotes

win9x:
Control Panel, modems, your modem properties, advanced button, and put the string in the other settings box withouto the quotes again

I appreciate the help but its still no go. I entered the string into the settings but it didnt do anything. please any more ideas =)

You don't have Call Answer service (voice mail) do you? The stuttered dial tone that it gives to tell you that you have a message confuses the modem into thinking that there is no dial tone.

Thanks..it looks like that string i typed in actually did something. Although I can not get connected yet (It says the other computer is not responding) Anyone know ho to ge this? Well I appreciate it. I am falling asleep in my hair so i better get to bed. thanx

Khayman was onto something earlier... Go to modems, click on diagnostics, select your modem, click on "more info". If your modem responds with all the AT mumbo-jumbo, you know it's talking to the computer. Next up, you want to make it talk to your phone lines. So I'd head to your network settings. Make sure you have the Client for Microsoft Networks installed and TCP/IP. Your modem should also show up there. Once you get that far, you should be able to connect, just double-check your username and password. If you get any errors, let us know.

This is how modems tell you they are dead. No DT, and other computer is not responding.

Time to RMA, or shell out another $5 for a new one

Ok I am back now..I went into diagnostics and clicked more info. The modem did communicate with the computer so I am pretty sure thats not the problem. Now I went into the network settings and Client for microsoft networks and TCP/IP was also there. What I failed to find was my modem. I saw my ethernet NIC listed and something called a dialup adapter...would that be the modem? The ethernet card showed the company and everything about it. This just says dialup adapter but makes no indication that it is the modem. Thanks for all the help but i wtill need more =)

I am thinking that the modem is still having problems with finding a dialtone. I entered that command into the settings to bypass the dialtone but I think this is just skipping over the problem. This is because when I click connect it starts dialing on the modem...but if i pick up the phone on that same line I just hear a dialtone...no connect noises. I also want to add that I tried using the modem on another computer and I recieved the same problems. Now I am pretty sure that it is neither the line or my computer causing this problem, but it must be the modem. There are tons of settings which I have no idea what they mean. I think the problem is that the modem is not communicating with the phone line. Please I am in desperate need of help:Thanks alot

The dial-up adapter listing under network properties is your modem. Go in there and make sure everything looks ok. Also make sure that all the settings are correct in the TCP/IP connections for the modem: DNS numbers, WINS numbers if your ISP requires them... things like that.
