Modem dials out fine but won't pick up when dialed to.

I have a computer running Windows 2000 Server set up as a domain controller. The 56k v.90 modem can dial into the internet without a problem. I have just installed RAS on this computer. As a test, I dialed the phone number for the computer to see if I would get the modem screeching noise. Instead, the modem would not pick up the call. On the phone I can hear the ringing and also a double beep every few seconds. Any ideas why the modem will not "pick up"? Do some modems not accept incoming calls?

No. I do not see anywhere in Windows 2000 Server where I can set such a thing.

You either need to set the initialization string for the modem to autoanswer (the actual command depends on the modem) or you have to tell the software to autoanswer which is the preferred way. (If you do the 1st way, the modem may answer but the software may not know to do anything.)

See if any of these help.

Send an "ATS0=xx" (that's a zero, and "xx" equals the number of rings to pick up on, make it at least three to dodge some hackers) to the modem as part of the initialization string.

Good Luck

If you need an answer string to give the modem, ATA should be the one you want. -TAL

I just pulled the modem from the computer and put in a US Robotics modem instead. This one answers when called.

Thanks for the replies.
