Modem Conflict after Format

We have an one older machine with an EPOX EP-58MVP3C-M mob and a Lucent Winmodem mod #F-1156HV-A5. It worked fine for a long time but had to format hard drive and install WIN98 SE. Now I can't get modem to work. Error message says make sure modem is installed and configured properly which I believe it is. If I try to run modem diagnostics from control panel it says "port already open". There is no IRQ conflicts and I don't know what else to look for. I tried the modem in another computer and it worked fine. Put a 3COM in this computer and it worked fine. Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks

I think the problem may be with the COMM port that is being used.

Under the device manager check to see which COMM ports are installed.(COMM 1, COMM 2, COMM 3 or COMM 4)

COMM 1 and COMM 2 should be installed but if they are not you can install them by using the add new hardware in the control panel.

I would also add COMM 3 and COMM 4 if you don't have them listed.

Then remove your modem from the system. Reinstall it using a different PCI slot if possible.

Reboot and then reinstall the drivers. If it gives you the option of which COMM port to use choose 4.

Hope that helps. If you need more help let us know.

It sounds to me like Windows didn't install the modem right.
Try removing the modem in device manager, look for yellow "?" too.
Have the correct drivers handy when you reboot.;)

I've always had luck with this method of installing PNP internal
modems. First start over: remove the modem and uninstall/delete
the modem drivers. Boot into BIOS. Disable COM2 in BIOS. Save
BIOS changes and reboot into Windows. Goto the device manager
and check COM ports. Only COM1 should show up. If COM2 is there
remove it and reboot. Now only COM1 should show.
Now shut down. Install the modem and bootup. Windows should
detect the new COM device (modem) and ask for drivers.
BTW use at least the 5.75 Lucent Winmodem drivers.....

Thanks for the advice guys. But I am still having problems, I had tried to add the comm ports but modem would always go to the next port.I even tried to format again because of all the different drivers and other modem I tried, or that i might have done something wrong. Then added Comm Ports 3 and 4 then shutdown and install modem and restart, install drivers and modem goes to Comm 5. And same error. As for disabling Comm 2 it was not Disable before and the modem worked but I might just have to try it.The modem is a ISA and I tried another slot but no difference. Thanks for all your help.
