I have SBC Yahoo DSL with a speedstream 5100b modem I just bought a d-link Dl-524 for $19 after rebates at BB, it's up and running like a champ the router is managing the PPPoE conection and everything appears to be kosher, but both the modem and router have the same default 192.168.0.1 address to access the setup. I changed the router's IP to 192.168.0.2 and now when I request 192.168.0.1 I get a could not find requested address message. Is there something I am missing? Should I not be able to access the modem's setup through the router? I believe I have both setup on the same subnet mask 225.225.225.0 should the subnet masks be different on the router and modem? I'm a network newb and really appreciate the help.

Change your router's IP address to 192.168.1.1. That will put your router and modem on different subnets instead of competing with each other on the same subnet, and will allow you to access the setup pages for both devices.

that sounds like it might work I won't be able to try it until I get home tonight though. I just changed the last digit of the address arbitrairly, should I have changed the second to last? Is there some rule of thumb as to how all these IP addresses work and when to use say 192.168.0.1 and when to use 192.168.0.100 or 10.10.10.10. I've looked for some explanation but haven't been able to find one that's written in laymans english.

I tried changing the router's IP to 192.168.1.1 and still couldn't access the modem except for by unplugging the router and connecting the modem directly into the LAN port. What's interesting is that even with just the modem connected I'm not able to access the modem after the PPPoE connection is initiated. Which means that if the router is initiating the PPPoE connection the modem's setup page should be unavailable reguardless of the IP. Why would an active PPPoE connection disallow the modem's setup page?
