I'm having problems getting a dial tone when I hookup the phone line into my computer and then another line from the modem out to the phone. I've tried direct connection from the line to the phone and it works, I've tried using the line that normally goes into the computer then out to the phone and directly hooked it up to the jack. I have no idea why the computer won't do a direct link from the modem to the line. Any ideas?

Edit: Also I've noticed that when ever I try to connect to the internet through dialup I get a looback detected error. I have no idea what to do and need help fast, thanks.

Update: Fixed the loopback error by removing the modem from device manger and redecting it but I'm still having problems with using the phone.

Just checking the obvious, but you've tried swapping the two phone line connections, just in case you made a mistake (or the modem manufacturer did), right?

Hi, I don't understand your problem 100% but maybe this will help. The phone connector on the modem is automaticall turned off when the modem is using the phone line. If you think you want to use the phone at the same time, plug it into the wall outlet with a splitter. You will only hear the modem talking and will probably cause the modem to go off the line. Yea I don't have the modem connected to the internet when I want to go online. I can get online perfectly fine so the connections are obviously postitioned correctly. I have line go into modem, modem can dial out, line come out of modem and into phone, modem is idle (offline) and try to call but no dial tone.

probably the connection between the 2 jacks inside the modem is broken. Tough luck, get a splitter instead.

It's retarded though because I JUST bought this $70 modem. I got it for the call waiting and all those other features, this is beyond retarded...

Does the phone work if the modem has no power? I mean with the computer unplugged, not just shut down. I am trying to find out if the modem is failing to release the line for some reason while it's powered up.
